The commitment was among 97 memoranda of understanding worth INR 67,542 crore signed at the state's first Vettri Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2026 in Chennai. The event, held in the presence of Chief Minister Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay, is expected to generate more than one lakh jobs across automotive, renewable energy, life sciences, electronics, research and development, and data centre sectors.
The Tamil Nadu government signed 97 fresh memoranda of understanding worth INR 67,542 crore at the inaugural Vettri Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2026, held in Chennai earlier this week, in the presence of Chief Minister Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay. Among the commitments was an investment of INR 10,000 crore by Light House Green Sara Centre Ltd to set up a hyperscale data centre in Thoothukudi.
The investments, spanning automotive, renewable energy, life sciences, electronics, research and development, and data centres, are expected to create employment opportunities for more than one lakh people, according to the state government. Industries and Investments Promotion Minister S Keerthana, addressing the conclave, said the commitments amounted to an average of INR 1,000 crore of committed capital for every day the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government had been in office since it took charge in May.
The largest single commitment at the event came from Australia's mining and infrastructure conglomerate AVID Group, which pledged INR 15,000 crore across Chennai and Thoothukudi for projects spanning urban infrastructure, experiential tourism, healthcare, and mining components manufacturing, expected to create 12,000 jobs. The Light House Green Sara Centre data centre commitment was the second-largest individual pledge disclosed at the conclave.
Several global manufacturing majors also announced fresh investments in the state. Germany's Daimler India Commercial Vehicles said it would invest INR 4,000 crore to expand its 400-acre facility in Oragadam for design, research and development, and manufacturing of commercial vehicles. France's Saint-Gobain, described as the world's largest glass manufacturer, committed INR 2,000 crore towards a new greenfield plant in Krishnagiri and an expansion of its existing facility in Kanchipuram. Japan's YKK was among other manufacturers announcing fresh commitments. As many as 25 companies signed deals to establish their first India facility in Tamil Nadu through the conclave.
According to the state government, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam administration has secured cumulative investment commitments exceeding INR 1 trillion within its first 100 days in office, with more than 1.2 lakh job opportunities expected to follow. Since the government was formed, a total of 104 memoranda of understanding have been signed for investments totalling close to INR 1 lakh crore, as part of the state's stated ambition to build towards a USD 1.5 trillion economy.
The Thoothukudi data centre pledge adds to a series of large-scale digital infrastructure commitments announced in Tamil Nadu in recent months, as the state positions itself as a hub for data centre and renewable energy investment alongside its established automotive and manufacturing base.
