MahaMetro has resurfaced Nagpur’s Wardha Road double-decker flyover after potholes and rough patches affected the ride quality for commuters. The repair followed reports highlighting the deteriorating condition of the city’s double-decker flyovers, particularly around the Ajni and Airport Square approaches and exits. The Wardha Road structure, which combines a road flyover and Metro viaduct, was opened in 2020 and continues to be maintained by MahaMetro. The repair also comes as both the Wardha Road and Kamptee Road structures are expected to eventually be handed over to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
MahaMetro has resurfaced the Wardha Road double-decker flyover in Nagpur after potholes and damaged stretches made the ride uncomfortable for commuters. The repair was carried out after concerns were raised over the deteriorating road surface on the structure and its approaches.
The damaged portions were particularly visible at the approaches and exits of the flyover, with motorists travelling towards Ajni and Airport Square facing rough patches while entering or descending from the elevated corridor. The main elevated stretch remained comparatively smooth, but the damaged sections affected the overall commuting experience.
MahaMetro had earlier acknowledged the road condition and indicated that repair work would be taken up once Nagpur received a period of dry weather. The resurfacing was subsequently completed following the reports on the condition of the flyover.
The Wardha Road flyover has faced maintenance concerns in the past as well. Potholes and loose gravel on the Ajni and Airport Square ramps were reported in 2024, and similar damage has returned during the current monsoon, again raising questions about the upkeep of the structure.
Opened in 2020, the 3.14-kilometre Wardha Road double-decker structure forms part of a three-level transport system, with the existing road at ground level, the road flyover above it and the Metro viaduct at the upper level. MahaMetro had integrated the road flyover and Metro structure on common piers, helping avoid the need for additional land acquisition.
The project was developed along one of Nagpur’s major arterial corridors and connects the Ajni area towards the Airport T-point. The structure also works with the Manish Nagar railway overbridge and underbridge, providing connectivity across the railway line.
The Wardha Road double-decker viaduct has also been recognised for its engineering design. MahaMetro has described the 3.14-kilometre structure as a double-decker viaduct carrying a highway flyover below the Metro corridor, with three Metro stations Chhatrapati Nagar, Jai Prakash Nagar and Ujjwal Nagar incorporated into the structure.
The recent resurfacing comes at a time when the maintenance responsibility of the city’s double-decker flyovers is also expected to change. Sources said the Wardha Road and Kamptee Road structures are eventually to be handed over to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). However, the civic body is expected to take over the structures only after they are restored to proper condition.
This restoration is expected to include smooth road surfaces and functional streetlights. The condition of the Kamptee Road double-decker flyover has also come under scrutiny, with potholes, damaged road surfaces and lighting issues reported at parts of the structure.
The resurfacing of Wardha Road addresses the immediate problem for commuters, but recurring damage at the ramps and approaches points to the need for regular maintenance, particularly during and after the monsoon. For a structure carrying both road traffic and Metro infrastructure, maintaining the road deck and associated facilities will remain important until the responsibility is formally transferred to the civic body.
