Kolkata Metro Railway plans to expand its rapid transit network to around 130 km in the coming years, according to General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta. The expansion was highlighted during the organisation’s Independence Day address at Metro Rail Bhavan, alongside details of passenger traffic, earnings and digital ticketing adoption. The network carried 23.60 crore passengers during FY26, underlining its role in Kolkata’s public transport system. Metro Railway also recorded earnings of INR 166 crore between April and July 2026, representing a 34% year-on-year increase. The organisation is simultaneously focusing on safety, passenger amenities and service reliability. Digital payment adoption has also increased, with commuters using electronic modes for tokens, smart cards, QR-code tickets and smart-card recharges through the Aamar Kolkata Metro app.
Kolkata Metro Railway will expand its network to around 130 km in the coming years, General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta said on Saturday as the rapid transit system marked the 80th Independence Day. The expansion plans were outlined during Gupta’s address at Metro Rail Bhavan, where he also reviewed the organisation’s recent passenger and financial performance.
Gupta said the planned expansion would further extend Kolkata’s rapid transit network and strengthen its role in the city’s public transport system. The announcement comes as Metro Railway continues to record substantial passenger usage across its network.
During FY26, Kolkata Metro Railway carried 23.60 crore passengers. The figure reflects the scale of demand for the metro system and its continuing importance as a public transport mode in the city.
Metro Railway has also reported higher earnings during the current financial year. Between April and July 2026, its earnings stood at INR 166 crore, representing a 34% increase from the corresponding period of the previous year. The increase was highlighted alongside the network expansion plans during the Independence Day address.
The organisation is also witnessing greater adoption of digital payment facilities among passengers. Commuters are increasingly using electronic modes to purchase tokens and smart cards, obtain QR-code-based tickets and recharge smart cards.
Passengers can access these digital ticketing and recharge facilities through the Aamar Kolkata Metro app, which is available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The increased use of digital payment systems forms part of the railway’s efforts to improve the convenience of ticketing and passenger services.
Alongside network expansion and digital services, Metro Railway authorities are working on measures to improve safety, passenger amenities and operational reliability. These areas were also identified by Gupta as priorities for the organisation as the network continues to expand.
The proposed increase to around 130 km will add to Kolkata’s existing rapid transit infrastructure and provide a larger metro network for passengers across the metropolitan area. The expansion is being planned as the city’s reliance on metro services continues to grow, with passenger numbers already reaching 23.60 crore in FY26.
The network expansion, together with improvements in passenger facilities, safety and digital ticketing, forms part of Metro Railway’s broader effort to strengthen Kolkata’s urban public transport system.
