The 645-km stretch of National Highway 66 passing through Kerala is scheduled for completion by May 2028, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said. The project includes highway works across the state, with the core roadway component targeted for completion by April 2027 and elevated corridors expected to be completed by May 2028. The timeline provides a phased completion schedule for one of Kerala’s major national highway infrastructure projects. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is responsible for implementing the works, which form part of the broader development and upgrading of NH-66. The project is significant for Kerala’s road infrastructure, given the highway’s role as a major north-south transport corridor connecting key parts of the state.
The 645-km stretch of National Highway 66 in Kerala is targeted for completion by May 2028, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said in the past week, with the main roadway works scheduled to be completed by April 2027 and elevated corridor components by May 2028.
The timeline covers the Kerala portion of NH-66, a major north-south highway corridor running through the state. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is implementing the highway development works, which include both conventional roadway construction and elevated sections.
According to the schedule outlined by Gadkari, the core roadway works across the 645-km stretch are expected to reach completion by April 2027. The remaining elevated corridors, which require additional structural and construction work, have been assigned a later completion target of May 2028.
The phased schedule separates the completion of the main highway works from the elevated sections, allowing the roadway component to be delivered ahead of the overall project timeline. The elevated corridors are being treated as a separate component within the broader NH-66 development programme.
NH-66 is an important road corridor in Kerala, serving traffic movement along the state’s western side and connecting several urban and regional centres. Its upgrading forms part of the Centre’s wider programme to improve national highway capacity and connectivity.
The Kerala stretch is among the major sections of NH-66 being upgraded as part of the national highway development programme. The project involves substantial construction activity along the existing corridor, with the elevated sections intended to address specific requirements within the highway alignment.
The completion schedule comes as the Centre continues to monitor the progress of national highway projects and establish timelines for major infrastructure works. Gadkari’s statement provides separate milestones for the main carriageway-related works and elevated structures rather than assigning a single completion date to all components.
For Kerala, the NH-66 works are also linked to improvements in road connectivity between different parts of the state. The highway provides a key route for passenger and freight movement, making the progress of its widening and associated infrastructure works relevant to the state’s transport network.
The 645-km project is therefore expected to remain under phased execution until the elevated sections are completed in May 2028. While the principal roadway works have an April 2027 target, the overall Kerala stretch will be considered complete only after the elevated corridor components are delivered.
Gadkari’s latest timeline places the completion of the core roadway works approximately one year ahead of the final project deadline. The May 2028 date consequently remains the overall target for completing the Kerala section of NH-66, including its elevated corridor works.
