Uber has expanded its bike taxi services to seven additional cities in West Bengal as part of its wider effort to increase its presence across India. The service has been launched in Asansol, Kharagpur, Murshidabad, Bardhaman, Panskura, Habra and Malda. Uber Bike is aimed at providing an affordable option for short-distance journeys and improving last-mile connectivity in smaller cities and emerging urban centres. The expansion will also provide local drivers with flexible earning opportunities. The company plans to take its services to more than 225 cities across the country.
Uber has expanded its bike taxi operations to seven more cities in West Bengal, widening its presence beyond the state's larger urban markets. The newly added cities are Asansol, Kharagpur, Murshidabad, Bardhaman, Panskura, Habra and Malda.
The company said Uber Bike is intended to serve short-distance travel requirements and provide last-mile connectivity. The two-wheeler service is also expected to offer local drivers a flexible way to earn through the platform.
The West Bengal rollout forms part of Uber's broader plan to expand its operations to more than 225 cities across India. The company has been increasing its focus on smaller cities and emerging urban centres, alongside its established presence in major metropolitan markets.
Uber's expansion in India has increasingly included different forms of mobility. The company had earlier expanded its offerings beyond cars to include autos, bikes and buses. In 2023, Uber said its services were available across more than 125 Indian cities and that more than 30 lakh drivers had earned through its platform since its entry into the country.
The latest expansion also reflects the growing role of two-wheelers in meeting short-distance and last-mile travel needs, particularly in cities where commuters may require quicker and lower-cost options for local journeys. Uber has previously positioned its bike and other mobility services as part of its efforts to address India's changing transportation requirements.
The seven new West Bengal markets add to Uber's wider expansion across the country. The company's current rollout strategy covers cities outside the traditional metro markets, with the aim of extending app-based mobility services to more users and creating additional opportunities for driver-partners.
