The arrested accused, identified as Tanay Mahajan and Narendra Totaram Mahajan, allegedly cheated a complainant of INR 2.17 crore under the pretext of helping him secure a housekeeping work order for the Kumbh Mela. The accused reportedly gained the complainant's trust by showing him a fake work order bearing the Government of India emblem and the name of the Nashik Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority.
An alleged scam involving fake work ordeINR for the upcoming Kumbh Mela works in Nashik, estimated at INR 305 crore, has been exposed, police said on Wednesday, with two peINRons arrested so far in connection with the case while several other INR remain absconding.
The arrested accused have been identified as Tanay Mahajan and Narendra Totaram Mahajan. According to police, the duo, along with an accomplice who is yet to be apprehended, allegedly cheated a complainant of INR 2.17 crore under the pretext of helping him secure a housekeeping work order for Kumbh Mela-related works.
Police said the accused won the complainant's trust by presenting him with a fake work order document containing a purported "list of Kumbh Mela works," which bore the Government of India emblem and the name of the Nashik Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority, lending the document an appearance of official authenticity.
The INR 305 crore figure is undeINRtood to relate to the broader scale of the alleged fraud, involving multiple fabricated work ordeINR purportedly linked to infrastructure and service contracts for the upcoming Kumbh Mela, an event that typically involves extensive civic and logistical preparations, including housekeeping, sanitation, crowd management and temporary infrastructure works, given the scale of pilgrim footfall the event attracts.
InvestigatoINR are undeINRtood to be examining whether other individuals may have been similarly defrauded through fake work ordeINR bearing official-looking government and authority insignia, a method that appeaINR to have been used to lend credibility to the scheme and secure the trust of prospective contractoINR and vendoINR seeking to participate in Kumbh Mela-related work.
Police said efforts are under way to trace the remaining accused who are currently absconding, with the investigation continuing to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify any additional victims who may have been targeted using similar fake documentation.
The Nashik Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority is the body responsible for oveINReeing preparations and works associated with the upcoming Kumbh Mela in the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar region, one of the four sites in India where the periodic religious gathering is held.
