Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will begin metro services at 4 am on Independence Day to facilitate travel for special guests, invitees and members of the public attending the celebrations at the Red Fort. Trains will operate from all terminal stations across the network at 30-minute intervals until regular revenue services begin. DMRC has also supplied 1.30 lakh special pre-vended QR tickets to the Ministry of Defence for authorised guests. Lal Quila, Jama Masjid and Delhi Gate are the nearest metro stations to the Red Fort venue.
Delhi Metro services will begin at 4 am on Saturday to facilitate the movement of special guests, invitees and members of the public attending the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. The early services will operate from all terminal stations across the Delhi Metro network.
Trains will run at a frequency of 30 minutes on all lines from 4 am until regular revenue services commence according to the scheduled timetable for the day. The special arrangement has been made to help passengers reach the celebration venue during the early morning hours.
DMRC has supplied 1.30 lakh special pre-vended QR tickets to the Ministry of Defence for the movement of special guests and bona fide invitees attending the Independence Day celebrations. Invitees carrying valid physical admit cards issued by the Ministry of Defence will also receive these special QR tickets at designated metro stations.
The cost of travel undertaken using these special QR tickets will be reimbursed to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation by the Ministry of Defence, according to DMRC.
Lal Quila, Jama Masjid and Delhi Gate are the nearest metro stations to the Red Fort, where the main Independence Day celebrations will take place. Passengers travelling to the venue have been advised to plan their journey in advance because of the large number of visitors and security arrangements in the area.
The early metro services come alongside additional security measures across the Delhi Metro network. DMRC has intensified security checks at stations in view of the Independence Day celebrations and has advised passengers to keep additional time for security screening.
The special metro schedule is also expected to help reduce pressure on roads around central Delhi, where traffic restrictions and diversions have been put in place for the Independence Day celebrations. Several roads near the Red Fort will face restrictions, while bus and commercial vehicle movement will also be regulated.
For regular commuters, services will return to the scheduled timetable once the special early-morning arrangement ends. The 4 am start is specifically intended to support transportation requirements connected with the Independence Day programme.
The arrangement is part of DMRC's regular transport planning for major national events, when large numbers of passengers need to reach central Delhi within a limited period. Starting services earlier allows guests and the public to use public transport before road restrictions become more extensive.
