The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has planted 200 Surangi saplings at Nisarg Udyan in Sector 14, Koparkhairane, as part of the ‘Mazi Vasundhara Abhiyan 7.0’ and the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. The 4-5 ft tall saplings were brought from Karnataka and planted by the mayor, municipal commissioner, elected representatives, civic officials, citizens and representatives of educational and social organisations. Mayor Sujata Patil also announced the proposed ‘Green Ward’ competition to encourage residents and institutions to participate in tree plantation and conservation. Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde said development in Navi Mumbai should take environmental considerations into account and that the civic body was prioritising native tree species while planning plantation activities to support biodiversity. Organisations that have assisted the civic body’s environmental initiatives were also felicitated during the programme.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has planted 200 Surangi trees at Nisarg Udyan in Sector 14, Koparkhairane, as part of the ‘Mazi Vasundhara Abhiyan 7.0’ and the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ tree plantation initiative.
The plantation programme was organised by the NMMC’s Garden Department, with Mayor Sujata Patil, Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde, elected representatives, civic officials, citizens and representatives of various organisations and educational institutions participating in the activity.
The Surangi saplings, brought specifically from Karnataka, were between four and five feet in height at the time of planting. The plantation covers a designated section of Nisarg Udyan, where the trees are expected to add a new flowering and fragrant tree species to the garden.
Surangi is a medium-sized evergreen tree known for its fragrant flowers and distinctive floral structure. The civic body said the plantation would result in the area of the garden being characterised by the fragrance of the Surangi flowers once the trees mature.
Speaking during the programme, Mayor Sujata Patil said environmental protection and conservation had become essential in view of prevailing environmental conditions. She said planting trees appropriately and ensuring their long-term maintenance was a responsibility shared by citizens.
Patil also announced the concept of a ‘Green Ward’ competition aimed at encouraging greater public participation in tree plantation and conservation. She appealed to institutions, organisations, groups and citizens to participate voluntarily in the environmental campaign as part of efforts to safeguard future environmental conditions.
Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde said coordinated efforts were required to increase awareness and address environmental degradation. He described environmental protection as an issue directly connected with human existence and said development should be undertaken while taking environmental considerations into account.
Shinde also said tree plantation undertaken in Navi Mumbai was being planned with biodiversity in mind, with priority being given to native tree species.
The programme was attended by several elected representatives and civic officials, including ward committee chairperson Chandrabhaga More, Health Committee chairman Dr Jayaji Nath, Water Supply Committee chairman Ravikant Patil, Law Committee chairperson advocate Sayali Shinde, corporators Sandeep Mhatre and D R Patil, and corporators advocate Bharti Patil, Diksha Kachare and Minakshi Patil.
Officials from the Garden Department and Koparkhairane ward office also participated. These included Deputy Municipal Commissioner Smita Kale, Assistant Commissioner and Koparkhairane ward officer Bharat Dhande, Assistant Garden Officer Bhalchandra Gavli, Garden Superintendent Vijay Kamble and Garden Assistant Shrikant Jadhav.
Representatives of social organisations, schools and colleges, including headmasters, teachers and students, also took part in the plantation programme.
The NMMC also felicitated organisations that have supported its environmental initiatives. Representatives of Aurum Foundation, which supplied the Surangi saplings, Concerto Pvt Ltd, Mahape, Dr Nanasaheb Dharmadhikari Pratishthan, Revdanda, Alibag, Shri Adishakti Nirmaladevi Sanstha, Koparkhairane, Sant Nirankari Mission, Koparkhairane, Shri Vitthal Rakhumai Bhajani Mandal, Morya Cultural Art and Sports Mandal, Dnyan Vikas Sanstha, Christ Academy School, Sector 23, Koparkhairane, NMMC School No. 36, Koparkhairane village, and Sunil Kindre Yuva Foundation were honoured with shawls, mementoes and certificates of appreciation.
The plantation programme forms part of the civic body’s broader environmental activities under Mazi Vasundhara Abhiyan 7.0. The NMMC said the emphasis on tree plantation, native species and biodiversity was intended to support environmental conservation across the city while encouraging wider participation from residents and local institutions.
