The Railways has approved a survey for a proposed 95-km broad-gauge railway line connecting Theni in Tamil Nadu with Erumeli in Kerala, an important gateway for pilgrims travelling to Sabarimala. The survey will assess the feasibility of establishing a direct rail connection between the two locations and will form the basis for preparing a detailed project report. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the approval in Parliament. The proposal will require further appraisal, consultations with the state governments and necessary clearances before any construction decision is taken.
The proposed Theni-Erumeli railway connection has moved forward with the Railways approving a survey for a 95-km broad-gauge route between Theni in Tamil Nadu and Erumeli in Kerala. Erumeli is an important access point for devotees travelling to the Sabarimala pilgrimage centre.
The survey follows a feasibility study process initiated through a tender floated last year. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the sanction in Parliament in response to questions raised by MPs P Ganapathy Rajkumar and Thanga Tamilselvan. The survey is expected to provide the technical and other inputs required for preparing a detailed project report.
At present, there is no direct railway connection between Theni and Erumeli. Travellers from Theni and surrounding parts of the district generally depend on road routes through Cumbum and Kumily to reach Erumeli and onward destinations such as Pamba. A railway connection on this corridor, if eventually approved and constructed, could provide an alternative mode of transport for passengers.
The proposed line would also extend Theni's existing railway network westwards towards Kerala. Rail connectivity to Theni was restored following the completion of the Madurai-Bodinayakanur gauge-conversion project. The 90-km corridor was completed at an estimated cost of around INR 593 crore and brought passenger train services back to the district.
The new survey is an initial step and does not amount to approval for construction of the railway line. Once the survey and project report are prepared, the proposal will have to undergo further examination. This process is expected to include consultations with the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, along with clearances from NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance.
No construction schedule has been fixed for the proposed Theni-Erumeli connection at this stage. The eventual decision will depend on the outcome of the survey, project appraisal, financial considerations and the required statutory and administrative approvals.
The proposed route has significance for both passenger connectivity and pilgrimage-related travel. Sabarimala attracts large numbers of devotees, particularly during its pilgrimage season, while Erumeli functions as one of the important access points to the shrine. A direct railway connection could potentially reduce dependence on road transport for travellers from Theni and nearby areas.
Beyond pilgrimage traffic, the proposed line could strengthen rail connectivity between southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Its eventual implementation could provide a new inter-state transport link and extend the reach of the existing railway network in the region.
For now, the focus remains on the survey and preparation of the project report. The findings will determine the technical feasibility and provide the basis for subsequent consideration by the relevant authorities.
The approval of the Theni-Erumeli survey marks an early but significant step towards a possible direct railway connection between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. While the project has not yet received construction approval or a completion timeline, the proposed 95-km route could improve passenger and pilgrimage connectivity if it clears the remaining appraisal and approval stages. The survey and detailed project report will be crucial in determining whether the proposed rail link progresses to execution.
