Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy reviewed a proposal for a flash-charging-based articulated electric bus system aimed at improving high-capacity public transport in Indian cities. The proposed system involves 18-metre bi-articulated electric buses that can carry around 130 passengers and receive rapid charging during short stops. Officials from several key ministries and government agencies participated in the discussion. The proposed charging model is intended to reduce charging downtime and support continuous bus operations, while helping cities move towards cleaner and more efficient public transport systems.
Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy chaired a meeting to review a proposal for a Flash Charging-based Articulated Electric Bus System, with the proposed model aimed at supporting high-capacity and cleaner public transport in Indian cities.
The meeting brought together officials from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, NITI Aayog, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Department of Science and Technology and other government departments.
Under the proposal, the system would use 18-metre bi-articulated electric buses with a passenger capacity of around 130 people. The buses would be supported by rapid flash or opportunity charging during short stops along their routes.
The proposed approach is intended to allow buses to continue operating with limited charging interruptions. Charging during short stops could reduce the need for long charging periods and, in turn, help address one of the operational challenges associated with deploying electric buses for high-frequency urban routes.
Kumaraswamy said the meeting discussed the potential of such systems to strengthen clean, efficient and future-ready urban mobility in India. The minister shared the details through a post on X.
Flash charging, also known as opportunity charging, involves providing power to electric buses at selected points during their regular operation rather than relying only on longer charging sessions at depots. Similar systems have been used internationally, including for high-capacity articulated electric buses, where short charging periods are integrated into normal passenger stops.
For Indian cities, the proposed system could be relevant to routes with high passenger demand where buses need to operate continuously throughout the day. The use of larger articulated buses would also allow more passengers to be carried per vehicle compared with conventional city buses.
The proposal is currently at the discussion and review stage, and the meeting focused on assessing the potential of the technology and its role in India's urban public transport system. No details on a specific city, route, implementation timeline or procurement plan were announced in the information released so far.
