Chennai Metro Rail Phase-II has achieved 54.62% physical progress on its planned 118.9-km network, with the Union government releasing INR 14,545.91 crore for the project so far. The INR 63,246-crore Phase-II project comprises three corridors Madhavaram-SIPCOT, Lighthouse-Poonamallee Bypass and Madhavaram-Sholinganallur with around 42 km underground. The project is being monitored by the Centre and Tamil Nadu government at multiple levels. Meanwhile, the 14.64-km Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani stretch, the first operational section of Phase-II, has completed mandatory safety clearances and is awaiting its inauguration date.
The Chennai Metro Rail Phase-II project has achieved 54.62% physical progress on its 118.9-km network, marking a significant milestone in the city's ongoing public transport expansion. The update was provided by the Union government in response to questions raised in the Lok Sabha.
According to the latest information, the Centre has released INR 14,545.91 crore for the project since its sanction in October 2024. Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said the release of funds is linked to the requirements of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) and the pace of construction.
The Phase-II project has an estimated cost of INR 63,246 crore and covers three major corridors. Corridor-3 will run from Madhavaram to SIPCOT over 45.8 km, while Corridor-4 will connect Lighthouse and Poonamallee Bypass over 26.1 km. Corridor-5, spanning 47 km, will connect Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. Around 42 km of the overall network will be underground.
The project's progress is being reviewed at multiple levels, including by a high-powered committee, the CMRL board of directors and the Central and Tamil Nadu governments. The monitoring mechanism is aimed at ensuring that construction progresses efficiently and the project moves towards completion
A key development within Phase-II is the 14.64-km Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani stretch, which is set to become the first operational section of the expansion. The stretch has already completed the mandatory safety clearances and is currently awaiting an inauguration date from the Centre.
Once the wider Phase-II network becomes operational, it is expected to strengthen connectivity across the Chennai Metropolitan Area. The expanded system will connect with existing railway stations, bus terminals, the airport and other metro corridors. Dedicated feeder services are also planned to improve last-mile connectivity and provide more convenient end-to-end public transport.
The progress of Phase-II comes as Chennai continues to expand its mass-transit infrastructure to meet growing urban mobility requirements. The combination of elevated and underground sections across the three corridors is intended to create a broader metro network connecting residential, commercial and transport hubs across the metropolitan region.
With more than half of the physical work now completed, the latest progress marks an important stage in the implementation of one of Chennai's largest urban transport projects.
