Four new road overbridges to ease traffic congestion across Mumbai

Synopsis

Mumbai is set to get four new road overbridges at Dadar, Byculla, Ghatkopar and Prabhadevi as part of a INR 1,179-crore infrastructure programme aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving east-west connectivity. The projects are being jointly executed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation. Three bridges will be cable-stayed structures, while Prabhadevi will get Mumbai’s first double-decker road overbridge. The new structures are replacing ageing bridges and are expected to be completed in phases between 2026 and 2027.

Mumbai is set for a major upgrade of its road infrastructure, with four new road overbridges coming up at Dadar, Byculla, Ghatkopar and Prabhadevi to address traffic bottlenecks and strengthen east-west connectivity across the city. 
The four projects have a combined investment of INR 1,179 crore and are being jointly executed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC). Three of the proposed structures will be cable-stayed bridges, while the Prabhadevi project will become Mumbai’s first double-decker road overbridge. 
The projects are also aimed at replacing ageing structures that have become inadequate for Mumbai’s increasing traffic volumes. The new bridges will provide wider carriageways and higher load-bearing capacity, with the structures designed to accommodate between two and six traffic lanes depending on the location. 
At Dadar, the century-old Tilak Bridge, commissioned in 1925, is being replaced by a 600-metre-long cable-stayed bridge with six lanes. The new structure will have three times the traffic capacity of the existing two-lane bridge. A structural audit conducted in 2019 had recommended replacing the old bridge because of its deteriorating condition. The first three-lane arm is around 70% complete and is expected to open by April 2027, with the entire bridge targeted for completion by May 2027. 
At Byculla, the century-old Y Bridge is being replaced with a 916-metre cable-stayed bridge. The project is intended to improve connectivity along the Byculla-Dadar corridor. One of the major construction challenges involved launching a 1,500-tonne steel span above the Central Vegetable Market without affecting market operations or railway traffic. The bridge is expected to open by December 2026 and will have a dual-carriageway configuration. 
The Ghatkopar bridge, being constructed along the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road across LBS Marg, will connect Ghatkopar East and West. The six-lane cable-stayed structure has a project cost of INR 350 crore and will be the first cable-stayed road bridge in Mumbai’s suburbs. Its construction is being carried out in phases to keep traffic moving, with completion targeted for 2027. 
At Prabhadevi, the demolished 112-year-old Elphinstone Bridge is being replaced with Mumbai’s first double-decker road overbridge. The structure will also form part of the Sewri-Worli Connector. Its lower deck will carry local traffic across the railway tracks, while the upper deck will connect to the upcoming road corridor. Both decks will have four traffic lanes, with footpaths on the lower level. Foundation work and girder assembly are underway, with completion targeted for November 2026. 
Building these structures over active railway corridors has required coordination among BMC, MRIDC, Central Railway, Western Railway, traffic police and utility agencies. The projects involve night blocks, traffic management and the launching of large steel components over live railway lines. 
With Mumbai’s suburban railway system carrying millions of passengers and road traffic continuing to increase, the four bridges are expected to improve connectivity and reduce congestion at some of the city’s busiest railway crossings.
