The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has floated a tender worth INR 121.6 crore for the construction of three vehicular underpasses along the Trichy-Chennai highway in Tamil Nadu. The proposed structures are aimed at improving connectivity and managing movement across the busy highway corridor.
The tender covers the development of three underpasses at locations identified by the highway authority. Such grade-separated infrastructure allows local traffic to cross a national highway without directly interacting with vehicles travelling along the main carriageway.
The proposed underpasses are expected to improve accessibility for communities and road users located along the highway. By providing dedicated crossing facilities, the project can also reduce the need for traffic to stop or divert through existing junctions and crossing points.
The Trichy-Chennai highway is an important road link in Tamil Nadu, connecting the central part of the state with Chennai. It carries a combination of long-distance commercial traffic and local vehicles, making efficient management of movements along the corridor important for both regional connectivity and road safety.
The development of vehicular underpasses is also part of a broader approach to improving access management on national highways. Grade separation can help separate local crossing movements from through traffic, potentially reducing conflicts between vehicles travelling at different speeds.
The INR 121.6 crore tender provides an opportunity for eligible contractors to participate in the construction programme. The project will move into the next stages following the bidding process and appointment of the successful contractor.
