Six railway stations in Bihar’s Bhagalpur Lok Sabha constituency ,Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon, Naugachia, Pirpainti, Sabaur and Shivanarayanpur, have been identified for development under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. According to the Ministry of Railways, work at Kahalgaon, Sabaur, Shivanarayanpur and Pirpainti has been completed, while projects at Naugachia and Bhagalpur are progressing. The programme covers passenger facilities, station access, parking, waiting areas, foot over bridges, lifts, signage and other amenities, with Bhagalpur also undergoing master planning for a larger redevelopment.
The Indian Railways is undertaking station improvement works across the Bhagalpur region as part of its broader effort to modernise passenger infrastructure. Six stations in the constituency have been brought under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which follows a phased, long-term approach rather than a single-stage redevelopment model.
Among the six stations, Kahalgaon, Sabaur, Shivanarayanpur and Pirpainti have completed their identified development works. At Kahalgaon, improvements include the station building, entrance area, circulation space, parking, toilets, waiting hall, executive lounge and passenger information systems. Sabaur has similarly received upgrades to its station building, entrance, circulation area, parking, waiting hall and other passenger facilities.
Shivanarayanpur has received improvements covering the station building, entrance, parking, landscaping, waiting areas and toilets, along with lifts, CCTV, signage and facilities for Divyangjan passengers. At Pirpainti, the works include expansion and improvement of the station building, entrance and circulation areas, parking, waiting facilities and passenger information systems. A 12-metre-wide foot over bridge has also been taken up at the station.
At Naugachia, ongoing works include a new station building, improvements to the circulation area and parking, platform shelters, platform surface upgrades and a new toilet block. The station is therefore among those where the redevelopment process remains under implementation.
Bhagalpur station is being taken up through a wider redevelopment planning exercise. Several works have already been completed, including improvements to the station building, circulating area, platform shelters and surfaces, a foot over bridge, a new waiting hall, train information systems and a sewage treatment plant. Lifts and an overhead water tank are currently being taken up, while a permanent holding area for crowd management has also been sanctioned.
The Ministry has also initiated master planning for Bhagalpur station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The planning process is intended to be refined according to the station's requirements and is part of the scheme's broader objective of integrating stations more effectively with surrounding urban areas.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme provides for improvements such as better station access and circulation areas, integration of both sides of a city, upgraded station buildings, improved waiting halls and toilets, wider foot over bridges or subways, lifts and escalators, enhanced platforms and shelters, parking, passenger information systems and facilities for Divyangjan. Depending on the requirements of individual stations, the framework can also include landscaping, multimodal integration, air concourses, executive lounges and sustainable infrastructure.
The six stations form part of the 98 railway stations in Bihar identified for development under the scheme. The Ministry said 1,340 stations across the country have so far been identified under the programme. In Bihar, eight stations, including Kahalgaon, Pirpainti, Sabaur and Shivanarayanpur, are listed as having completed development works.
The station upgrades are also being undertaken against the backdrop of significant passenger movement in the Bhagalpur area. Bhagalpur station currently handles 108 train services, while a Sahibganj-Bhagalpur MEMU service was introduced from January 2026. The station is also served by the Howrah-Jamalpur Vande Bharat Express.
The redevelopment programme is expected to improve basic passenger amenities while gradually changing the interface between railway stations and the cities and towns they serve. For Bhagalpur and the five other stations, the extent and pace of further works will depend on station-specific requirements, planning, priorities and availability of funds.
