Synopsis

The Railway Board has given in-principle approval for the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling and train control system for Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line and the entire Blue Line under Phase 2A and 2B up to Kempegowda International Airport. The approval is an important step towards commissioning the Pink Line’s first operational section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited has been following up with the Railway Board and Research Designs and Standards Organisation to complete the approval process. The system will support modern train control and signalling across the two upcoming corridors.

The Railway Board has given in-principle approval for the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling and train control system for Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line and the entire Blue Line extending to Kempegowda International Airport.
The approval covers the Pink Line, also known as Reach-6, between Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara, along with the Blue Line’s Phase 2A and Phase 2B sections from Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport.
The approval is an important step towards commissioning the Pink Line, particularly the 7-km elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has been following up with the Railway Board and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to complete the approval process.
CBTC is a signalling system that uses continuous communication between trains and the control centre to manage train movement. It can support closer train operations and automated train control while improving monitoring of services.
The Pink Line will eventually run for about 21 km between Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara, with both elevated and underground sections. The Blue Line, comprising Phase 2A and 2B, will connect Central Silk Board with Kempegowda International Airport and cover around 58 km.
The approval also comes as BMRCL moves towards commissioning new metro corridors and expanding Bengaluru’s network. The Pink Line is being developed with driverless trainsets, while the Blue Line will provide a direct metro connection towards the airport.
BMRCL will now have to complete the remaining statutory and safety procedures before passenger services can begin on the relevant Pink Line section. The CBTC approval is therefore one of the key requirements for moving the corridor towards commercial operations.
