Kerala is set to strengthen its maritime sector with the proposed entry of the Tata Group into shipbuilding and ship maintenance. The state government said the company plans to establish its first shipbuilding venture in Kerala as part of broader efforts to attract investment into the maritime industry. The government is also working with public sector oil companies to develop bunkering facilities and is extending support to Cochin Port for a proposed cruise terminal. These initiatives are aimed at improving port infrastructure and expanding Kerala's maritime ecosystem.
Kerala is set to get the Tata Group's first shipbuilding venture in the state, with plans to establish shipbuilding and ship maintenance facilities as part of efforts to expand its maritime infrastructure and attract investments into the sector.
Speaking at the inauguration of Maritime Mahotsavam-2026, organised by Kerala Samudra Mission, earlier this week, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said the state government is focusing on strengthening Kerala's maritime sector through infrastructure development and new investments. He said the Tata Group plans to set up shipbuilding units in Kerala and will also establish facilities for ship maintenance.
The Chief Minister further said the state government has been holding discussions with major public sector oil marketing companies to support the growth of the maritime sector. According to him, the government has offered to provide bunkering facilities and has held talks with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) regarding the development of such infrastructure.
Bunkering facilities, which provide fuel and related services to ships, are considered an important part of port infrastructure and can help improve the competitiveness of ports by supporting commercial shipping operations.
The state government also said it plans to extend support to Cochin Port for the development of a cruise terminal. The proposed facility is expected to strengthen cruise tourism in Kerala while improving passenger handling infrastructure at the port.
Kerala has been working to enhance its maritime capabilities through port modernisation, logistics development and coastal infrastructure projects. The state is also promoting investments across its port network to improve cargo handling, ship repair and marine-related services, while leveraging its long coastline and strategic location along international shipping routes.
