US retail sales grow at a slower pace as consumers remain cautious on spending

#International News#United States of America
Synopsis

Consumer spending in the US remained positive but slowed during the past month as households continued to manage higher living costs and economic uncertainty. Retail sales posted modest growth compared with the previous month, while online shopping and spending on sporting goods remained strong. Cooling inflation and lower fuel prices offered some relief, but consumers continued to prioritise essential purchases over discretionary spending. The latest data also comes as retailers prepare to announce quarterly earnings, which are expected to provide a clearer picture of shopping trends in the coming months.

US retail sales recorded modest growth during the past month, reflecting cautious consumer spending despite easing inflation and lower fuel prices. According to the latest report released by the US Commerce Department, retail sales increased 0.2 per cent after a revised 1 per cent rise in the previous month, indicating that shoppers remained careful with discretionary purchases amid ongoing economic uncertainty and the fading impact of government tax refunds.
Excluding sales at fuel stations, retail sales increased by a stronger 0.7 per cent, suggesting that consumer demand across several retail categories remained healthy despite broader economic concerns.
Among individual sectors, clothing and accessories stores reported a 0.3 per cent decline in sales. In contrast, online retailers registered a 1.9 per cent increase, supported by higher consumer spending during Amazon's Prime Day promotional event held in the previous month.
Sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores recorded a 1.3 per cent rise in sales, helped by consumer spending linked to the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup and related events during the period.
The retail sales data represents only spending on goods and does not include services such as travel and hotel stays. Restaurants, the only services category included in the report, posted a modest 0.1 per cent increase in business.
The latest retail data follows signs that inflation in the United States eased during the past month. Lower prices for fuel, clothing and used vehicles helped reduce overall inflationary pressure and offered some relief to households facing elevated living costs.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), petrol prices stood at USD 3.94 per gallon during the past week, compared with USD 4.04 per gallon a month earlier.
Earlier this week, the US Labor Department reported that consumer prices declined by 0.4 per cent compared with the previous month, marking the sharpest monthly fall in four years after a 0.5 per cent increase a month earlier. Annual inflation also eased to 3.5 per cent from 4.2 per cent in the previous month, performing better than many economists had anticipated.
Economists said the core inflation data suggested that although higher fuel prices triggered by tensions involving Iran had increased costs such as airfares, they had not yet resulted in broad and sustained inflation across the wider economy.
However, geopolitical developments continue to pose risks. The United States recently renewed military action against Iran, while President Donald Trump announced a new blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping routes that carries nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies. Analysts believe any prolonged disruption could increase energy prices again and reverse some of the recent progress in controlling inflation.
Attention is now shifting to the upcoming quarterly earnings announcements from major US retailers, including Walmart, Target and Macy's. Their results, scheduled for the coming month, are expected to provide a clearer picture of consumer spending trends and retail demand.
A report released during the past month by the Conference Board also showed that consumer confidence improved slightly as fuel prices declined. However, overall sentiment remained below historical averages, indicating that many Americans continue to be concerned about the economic outlook.
Sarah Williamson, a 27-year-old software support engineer from Raleigh, North Carolina, said she had become more careful with her spending over the past year. Although she considered herself financially secure because of her stable job, rising food and fuel costs had made her reduce non-essential purchases.
She explained that she no longer shops recreationally as often as before and has become more selective while making everyday purchases. Williamson said she avoids buying pre-cut fruits at supermarkets because they cost more than whole fruits and is also cautious while purchasing clothing.
She recently purchased a dress worth USD 30, including delivery charges, through TikTok Shop and bought a cotton nightgown for USD 72, including shipping, on Amazon. Although the nightgown cost more than she would normally spend, she believed it was worthwhile because she uses it frequently.
Brian Reynolds, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Just For Teens, a skincare brand focused on preteens and teenagers, said affordable products continued to perform well as families looked for value-based purchases. His product range includes USD 5 pimple patches designed for budget-conscious consumers.
He added that the brand is expected to expand to around 10,000 Dollar General stores by October, compared with nearly 4,000 stores late last year. Reynolds said sales had remained steady so far and expected stronger momentum during the back-to-school shopping season. He also noted that there continues to be strong demand for everyday essential products that are competitively priced.
