India should now place greater emphasis on enhancing the quality of tourist experiences rather than focusing only on increasing visitor numbers, Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said while addressing the FAITH Conclave in New Delhi earlier this week. He highlighted the need to strengthen visitors' connection with India's cultural heritage so they leave with a deeper understanding of the country's civilisation. The minister said a better travel experience could encourage international tourists to become long-term ambassadors for India, supporting the country's tourism growth through positive global word-of-mouth.
India should now focus not only on increasing the number of tourists visiting the country but also on improving the overall experience they have during their stay, Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said while addressing the FAITH Conclave in New Delhi earlier this week.
Speaking at the industry event, the minister said the tourism sector had reached a stage where greater attention should be given to creating a lasting impact on visitors. He said efforts should go beyond attracting more tourist footfalls and should also aim to make every visit meaningful.
Shekhawat said improving the overall travel experience would help international visitors develop a stronger connection with India's cultural heritage, traditions and civilisation. According to him, a positive and memorable experience would encourage tourists to share India's cultural values and stories after returning to their home countries.
He further said that every tourist visiting India should leave as a civilisational ambassador for the country. He noted that India's rich history, diverse culture and centuries-old civilisation offer a unique opportunity to create deeper engagement with global travellers.
The minister's remarks come as India continues to strengthen its tourism sector through infrastructure upgrades, improved connectivity, digital initiatives and heritage conservation. The government has also been promoting thematic tourism, spiritual circuits, cultural destinations and domestic tourism to increase visitor engagement while improving travel facilities across the country.
