A fatal construction accident occurred at an under-construction high-rise in Mira Road on Thursday evening after a tower crane collapsed from the 13th floor, killing one person and injuring three others. The incident took place at the JP North residential complex in Thane district, where the falling crane struck the parking area below, causing extensive damage to several vehicles.
According to officials, the crane, which was being used for construction activities at the project site, suddenly gave way and crashed onto the ground. The impact damaged multiple parked cars and created panic among residents of the adjoining residential buildings. Emergency response teams, including police and fire brigade personnel, were immediately deployed to the site to carry out rescue and relief operations.
The deceased was identified as a 20-year-old man, while three others sustained injuries in the incident. The injured were admitted to hospital for treatment, with one reported to be in a critical condition. Rescue personnel also searched the affected area to ensure that no additional workers or residents were trapped beneath the collapsed structure or debris.
Authorities cordoned off the accident site to facilitate rescue efforts and prevent further risks to nearby residents. Heavy equipment was deployed to remove sections of the collapsed crane and clear the debris from the parking area. The damaged vehicles remained at the site as officials assessed the extent of the losses caused by the collapse.
Officials have initiated an investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact cause of the crane failure. The inquiry is expected to examine whether the collapse resulted from mechanical defects, structural issues, adverse weather conditions or lapses in construction safety practices. The findings will determine whether any action is required against the agencies responsible for the project.
The accident has renewed attention on construction safety at large residential developments in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where high-rise projects continue to expand. Regulatory authorities are expected to review safety compliance at the site as part of the investigation, including adherence to prescribed standards governing the installation and operation of heavy lifting equipment.
The incident follows a series of monsoon-related disruptions and infrastructure accidents reported across the region in recent weeks. Authorities have indicated that a detailed technical assessment of the crane and construction site will be undertaken before further decisions are taken regarding the project's ongoing construction activities.
