• The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved two railway capacity expansion projects worth approximately INR3,907 crore to strengthen rail infrastructure in Odisha and Jharkhand.
• The approved projects include the doubling of the Paradeep–Haridaspur line and the fourth railway line between Rajkharsawan and Dangoaposi, adding around 145 km to the Indian Railways network.
• The projects will improve connectivity to nearly 1,526 villages with a combined population of around 14 lakh, while boosting freight movement and access to key tourist destinations.
• The capacity enhancement is expected to support an additional 44 million tonnes of freight annually, reduce logistics costs, save fuel and lower carbon emissions, in line with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two railway infrastructure projects worth approximately INR3,907 crore to enhance rail capacity in Odisha and Jharkhand. The projects are aimed at improving freight movement, increasing operational efficiency and strengthening multimodal connectivity under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
The approved projects include the doubling of the Paradeep–Haridaspur railway line in Odisha and the construction of a fourth railway line between Rajkharsawan and Dangoaposi in Jharkhand. Together, the projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 145 kilometres, easing congestion on key freight corridors and improving service reliability.
According to the government, the projects will benefit around 1,526 villages across four districts in the two states, covering an estimated population of 14 lakh. The enhanced rail infrastructure is expected to improve passenger connectivity while supporting regional economic development through better transport links and increased employment opportunities.
The upgraded network will also strengthen connectivity to important tourist destinations, including the Lalitgiri Buddhist Complex, Shree Baladevjew Temple and Meghahatuburu Hills, making travel to these locations more convenient.
The routes are strategically important for transporting bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore, dolomite, limestone and gypsum. Once completed, the capacity augmentation is expected to facilitate an additional 44 million tonnes of freight traffic per annum (MTPA), improving logistics efficiency for industries and reducing transportation bottlenecks.
The government said the projects align with its vision of creating a modern, efficient and sustainable railway network. By increasing rail capacity, the projects are expected to reduce dependence on road transport, lower logistics costs and support industrial growth in the region.
The environmental benefits are also significant. Indian Railways estimates that the enhanced rail capacity will help save around 6 crore litres of oil while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 29 crore kilograms, an environmental impact equivalent to planting one crore trees. The projects are expected to contribute to India's climate goals while reinforcing railways as an energy-efficient mode of transportation.
