Synopsis

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd has completed the first segment erection using a launching girder for the elevated Blue Line of the Bhopal Metro project at Piplani Chouraha, marking the start of viaduct construction on the corridor. The engineering milestone relates to the 13-km elevated section extending from Bhadbhada to Ratnagiri, being developed by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL). Afcons is executing the project under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. The commencement of segment erection is expected to facilitate faster progress of viaduct construction on the corridor, which forms part of the Bhopal Metro network aimed at improving urban public transport connectivity in the Madhya Pradesh capital.

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd has completed the first viaduct segment erection using a launching girder for the elevated Blue Line of the Bhopal Metro project, marking the commencement of superstructure construction on the corridor. The milestone was achieved at Piplani Chouraha on the 13-km elevated stretch connecting Bhadbhada and Ratnagiri, the company announced on Monday.
The elevated corridor forms part of the Bhopal Metro, also referred to as the Bhoj Metro, which is being developed by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL). Afcons is executing the Blue Line as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.
According to the company, the successful erection of the first precast segment using the launching girder establishes the sequence for subsequent viaduct construction and is expected to accelerate work along the corridor. The viaduct extends approximately 12.9 km and constitutes a key component of the metro project's elevated infrastructure.
The first segment erection ceremony was held in the presence of the Director (Works) of Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd and other officials associated with the project.
Launching girders are specialised construction equipment used to install precast concrete segments in elevated metro and bridge projects. The technology enables segmental construction while minimising disruption to traffic below and improving construction efficiency in densely populated urban areas.
The Bhopal Metro project is being implemented to strengthen public transport infrastructure in the city by providing an alternative mass transit system designed to improve urban mobility and reduce dependence on road-based transport. The Blue Line is one of the principal corridors planned under the metro network.
Afcons Infrastructure, the flagship engineering and construction company of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, has been involved in the execution of transport infrastructure, marine, bridge, tunnelling and urban transit projects in India and overseas. The company has executed several metro rail contracts across the country under EPC arrangements.
The commencement of segment erection represents an important construction milestone in the delivery of the elevated corridor, as viaduct construction generally follows the completion of foundation and pier works. With launching operations now underway, construction activity on the Blue Line is expected to progress across additional sections of the corridor as the project advances towards subsequent stages of execution.
