• Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, have inaugurated the 63-km Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and several National Highway projects in the state.
• The six-lane access-controlled expressway has been developed at an estimated cost of around INR 4,700 crore.
• The new corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur to around 40–45 minutes.
• The inauguration forms part of the Centre's broader strategy to strengthen road connectivity and support industrial and economic growth across Uttar Pradesh.
The Centre has inaugurated the long-awaited Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway along with a series of National Highway projects in Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant milestone in the state's expanding transport infrastructure network. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly dedicated the projects to the public during an event in Unnao. The projects are aimed at improving regional connectivity, easing traffic congestion and supporting economic development across central Uttar Pradesh.
The newly opened Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is a 63-km, six-lane access-controlled corridor developed at an estimated cost of around INR 4,700 crore. Running parallel to the existing highway between the two cities, the expressway has been designed to provide a faster and safer alternative for commuters and freight traffic while accommodating future traffic growth through provisions for expansion.
With the commissioning of the expressway, travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur is expected to reduce substantially from nearly three hours during peak traffic conditions to about 40–45 minutes. The corridor is also expected to improve logistics efficiency by facilitating faster movement of goods between the state capital, industrial centres and adjoining districts.
Besides the expressway, the leaders inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for additional National Highway projects worth more than INR 4,850 crore. These include road widening, bypasses and connectivity improvements intended to strengthen the state's highway network and improve access to key urban and industrial centres.
Speaking at the event, the leaders highlighted the importance of modern highway infrastructure in supporting investment, manufacturing, tourism and employment generation. Improved connectivity is expected to complement ongoing industrial initiatives, logistics parks and economic corridors being developed across Uttar Pradesh.
The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway also forms part of the broader effort to create an integrated expressway network in the state. The corridor will connect with other strategic road projects, including the Ganga Expressway and the Kanpur Ring Road, enabling seamless regional mobility and strengthening links between eastern, central and western Uttar Pradesh.
Officials noted that enhanced road infrastructure is expected to reduce congestion on existing highways, improve road safety and provide long-term support for urban expansion around both Lucknow and Kanpur. The project is also expected to benefit nearby districts by improving access to markets, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and industrial clusters.
The inauguration reinforces the Centre's continued focus on expanding high-speed road infrastructure under national connectivity programmes, with Uttar Pradesh emerging as one of the key beneficiaries of large-scale investments in expressways and National Highway development. The government expects these projects to contribute significantly to regional economic growth while improving the overall efficiency of passenger and freight movement across the state.
