Jaisalmer railway station has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment at an investment of approximately INR 140 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, combining traditional Rajasthani architecture with modern passenger infrastructure. The upgraded station is designed to reflect the city's historic identity while offering improved facilities for residents and tourists visiting one of India's most prominent heritage destinations.
The station's new façade draws inspiration from Jaisalmer's iconic golden sandstone architecture, incorporating design elements that resemble the city's forts, palaces and havelis. The redevelopment seeks to preserve the region's cultural character while transforming the station into a contemporary transport hub capable of handling rising passenger traffic.
The modernisation includes several passenger-centric improvements such as lifts, escalators, wider concourses, upgraded waiting halls, improved ticketing areas, enhanced lighting, digital passenger information systems and better sanitation facilities. Accessibility features have also been incorporated to improve convenience for elderly passengers and persons with disabilities.
Redevelopment works have also focused on improving circulation inside and outside the station premises. Better entry and exit points, organised parking facilities, landscaped public spaces and improved pedestrian movement are expected to enhance the overall commuter experience. The station has also been equipped with upgraded security systems and modern utilities to support increasing passenger volumes.
Jaisalmer serves as a key gateway to Rajasthan's tourism sector, attracting domestic and international visitors to landmarks such as Jaisalmer Fort, Sam Sand Dunes and several heritage monuments. The upgraded railway station is expected to strengthen tourism infrastructure by providing visitors with an improved first impression of the city while supporting smoother passenger movement during peak travel seasons.
The redevelopment forms part of the Government of India's Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, under which more than 1,300 railway stations across the country are being modernised with improved passenger amenities, multimodal integration and locally inspired architectural designs. Rather than adopting a uniform design template, the programme encourages stations to reflect the cultural and historical identity of their respective regions.
Officials have stated that the upgraded station balances heritage conservation with modern infrastructure, ensuring that architectural aesthetics are retained while operational efficiency is enhanced. The project also aligns with broader efforts to improve connectivity and strengthen infrastructure in tourism-driven cities.
With improved passenger amenities, better accessibility and heritage-inspired architecture, the revamped Jaisalmer railway station is expected to support growing tourism demand and contribute to the city's economic activity.
