Synopsis

• The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set August 31, 2026, as the deadline for completing the Vidyavihar railway flyover, which is expected to improve east-west connectivity in Mumbai's eastern suburbs.
• Around 80% of the project has been completed, with the remaining works including girder installation, deck slab construction, lighting and safety infrastructure.
• The civic body has also directed contractors to accelerate work on the Mankhurd-Maharashtra Nagar flyover, targeting completion by May 2027.
• Both projects are expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity and reduce travel time for daily commuters.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has fixed a fresh deadline for completing the long-awaited Vidyavihar railway flyover, one of Mumbai's key transport infrastructure projects aimed at improving east-west mobility. With construction entering its final phase, civic officials have instructed contractors to expedite the remaining work while maintaining safety standards. The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between major arterial roads and reduce congestion across the eastern suburbs.
During a recent site inspection, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar directed officials and contractors to complete the Vidyavihar flyover by August 31, 2026. He also reviewed progress on the Mankhurd-Maharashtra Nagar flyover project and instructed agencies to deploy additional manpower and equipment to ensure timely completion of both infrastructure works.
The Vidyavihar flyover is designed to improve east-west connectivity by linking Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg with Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg. The four-lane structure extends approximately 650 metres, including a section spanning the railway tracks, along with approach roads on both sides. Once operational, it is expected to provide a faster route for motorists while reducing dependence on existing congested road crossings.
According to civic officials, nearly 80% of the construction has already been completed. The remaining work includes installation of anti-crash barriers, street lighting, girder launching across the remaining railway spans, deck sheeting and deck slab construction. Progress on some engineering activities will depend on weather conditions during the ongoing monsoon season.
The project also incorporates improvements around Vidyavihar railway station. Existing ticket counters, the station master's office and pedestrian staircases connected to the foot overbridge have been reconstructed as part of the overall redevelopment. Additional pedestrian access linking the railway station with adjoining roads is also being developed to improve commuter convenience.
Before opening the flyover to traffic, the BMC plans to coordinate with the Mumbai Traffic Police and other civic departments to streamline traffic movement along the approach roads. Officials have been asked to identify potential bottlenecks, including roadside obstructions, footpaths and landscaping elements, to ensure smooth vehicular movement once the bridge becomes operational.
Alongside the Vidyavihar project, the civic body has also accelerated work on both arms of the Mankhurd-Maharashtra Nagar flyover, fixing May 31, 2027, as the completion target. The flyover is intended to decongest the busy Maharashtra Nagar junction, a critical point for traffic travelling between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and the eastern suburbs.
With both flyovers progressing simultaneously, the BMC expects the projects to improve traffic circulation across key transport corridors, reduce travel delays and strengthen connectivity between Mumbai's eastern neighbourhoods. Once completed, the infrastructure is expected to provide long-term relief to thousands of daily commuters using these heavily congested routes.
