Synopsis

• Madhya Pradesh has launched the INR 5,017 crore Ujjain-Jaora Greenfield Highway project to strengthen road connectivity across the Malwa region.
• The 98.73-km four-lane corridor will provide direct access to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and improve connectivity between Ujjain and Jaora.
• The project is expected to support industrial growth, logistics, tourism and preparations for Simhastha 2028.
• The highway will be developed by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and is targeted for completion by December 2027.

The Madhya Pradesh government has launched construction of the Ujjain-Jaora Greenfield Highway, a major road infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in the Malwa region. With an estimated investment of INR 5,017 crore, the four-lane corridor is expected to reduce travel time, strengthen access to the national highway network and facilitate economic activity across western Madhya Pradesh.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav performed the foundation-laying ceremony for the project at Nagda, describing the highway as a strategic investment in regional infrastructure. The project will be executed by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) under the Hybrid Annuity Model, which combines public and private sector participation in project financing and execution.
The proposed corridor will extend approximately 98.73 kilometres from Mangrola near Ujjain to Jaora in Ratlam district. A key feature of the project is its direct integration with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway through an eight-lane interchange, providing faster connectivity between the Malwa region and one of India's most important economic corridors.
Besides improving inter-city travel, the highway is expected to strengthen freight movement by offering a more efficient route for commercial vehicles. Better road connectivity is also likely to benefit agricultural supply chains, manufacturing units and logistics operators by reducing transportation time and improving market access for businesses operating in the region.
The project has also been planned with future infrastructure requirements in mind. According to the state government, the corridor will include several engineering structures such as flyovers, railway overbridges, major and medium bridges, underpasses, overpasses and culverts to ensure uninterrupted movement while maintaining connectivity for surrounding settlements.
Officials have highlighted the highway's importance for Simhastha 2028, when Ujjain is expected to receive millions of pilgrims during the Kumbh Mela. Improved road capacity is expected to support traffic management and facilitate smoother movement of visitors travelling from neighbouring states through the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway network.
The corridor is also expected to contribute to long-term regional development by improving connectivity across Ujjain and Ratlam districts and encouraging investment in industrial, commercial and tourism-related activities. Enhanced accessibility often plays a significant role in attracting new businesses while improving connectivity between urban centres and surrounding rural areas.
The state government has set December 2027 as the target for completing the project, enabling the highway to become operational ahead of Simhastha 2028. Once commissioned, the Ujjain-Jaora Greenfield Highway is expected to become a key transport link supporting mobility, economic growth and infrastructure development across the Malwa region.
