Synopsis

A new heritage-themed public park has been inaugurated along the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad as part of the city's urban renewal initiatives. Developed by the UNM Foundation in partnership with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the INR 10 crore project spans 20,000 sq m between Swami Vivekananda Bridge and Nehru Bridge. The park features permanent installations highlighting Ahmedabad's historical and cultural evolution and forms part of the foundation's wider programme to develop and maintain public open spaces across Gujarat. With the addition of the new park, the foundation now manages 12 public parks covering more than 1.5 lakh sq m in Ahmedabad.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated a heritage-themed public park along the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad during the past week. The project has been developed by the UNM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Torrent Group promoters, in partnership with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Constructed at an investment of approximately INR 10 crore, the Heritage Park occupies around 20,000 sq m between Swami Vivekananda Bridge and Nehru Bridge on the Sabarmati riverfront. The project forms part of the UNM Foundation's Pratiti urban renewal initiative, under which public parks, lakes and green spaces are being restored and maintained across Gujarat.
According to the foundation, the park has been designed to present Ahmedabad's historical and cultural evolution through a series of permanent public installations. Five themed exhibits have been incorporated into the development, illustrating different phases of the city's heritage and urban growth.
The installations include displays on the dynasties that ruled Ahmedabad, the historic Royal Axis connecting Bhadra Fort, Teen Darwaza and Jama Masjid, the traditional Mata ni Pachhedi folk art, the evolution of the city's urban centre, and the history of the circus grounds that once occupied sections of the Sabarmati riverbed.
The foundation said the park has been conceived as an interactive public space where visitors can engage with the city's cultural and historical legacy through curated installations integrated into the landscape.
The Heritage Park is the twelfth public park to be created and maintained by the UNM Foundation in Ahmedabad under the Pratiti initiative. With its addition, the organisation now manages more than 1.5 lakh sq m of public parks across the city, accounting for over 15% of Ahmedabad's total green area. The foundation also confirmed that four additional parks covering more than 40,000 sq m are currently under development.
Beyond Ahmedabad, the Pratiti initiative encompasses the restoration and maintenance of 17 parks, two lakes and other public green spaces across Gujarat, together covering approximately 8.44 lakh sq m. The foundation has also committed to restoring and maintaining 69 lakes in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar as part of its wider ecological and urban improvement programme.
According to the UNM Foundation, its philanthropic initiatives extend across healthcare, education, ecology, art and culture, benefiting more than 25 million people in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and the Union Territory of Daman. The Heritage Park represents another addition to Ahmedabad's public realm infrastructure, combining landscape development with the preservation and interpretation of the city's historical identity.
