Synopsis

The Delhi government has requested the Centre to declare the 8.8-km Mandi Road in south Delhi a National Highway and transfer its development to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has written to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, stating that the move would enable integrated planning, uniform engineering standards and faster infrastructure upgrades. The corridor links Delhi with Faridabad and Gurugram and serves as an important route for inter-state traffic. The proposal is intended to improve regional connectivity, reduce congestion and support planned infrastructure development across the National Capital Region (NCR).

The Delhi government has urged the Centre to grant National Highway status to the 8.8-km Mandi Road in south Delhi, seeking to strengthen connectivity between the national capital and the neighbouring cities of Faridabad and Gurugram.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has written to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, requesting that the corridor be declared a National Highway and its development be entrusted to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The proposal was submitted during the past week as part of the government's efforts to improve transport infrastructure across the National Capital Region (NCR).
According to the Chief Minister, Mandi Road functions as a key inter-state transport corridor and carries substantial commuter and commercial traffic between Delhi, Haryana and adjoining NCR regions. She stated that according National Highway status to the route would facilitate integrated planning, ensure the adoption of uniform engineering standards and enable timely infrastructure upgrades under the NHAI framework.
The government has proposed that the road be brought under the jurisdiction of NHAI to streamline its planning, construction and long-term maintenance. The move is expected to improve coordination for future widening, junction improvements, traffic management measures and other infrastructure works along the corridor.
In her communication to the Union minister, Gupta noted that improved connectivity through Mandi Road would strengthen links between Delhi and major urban centres in Haryana, while also supporting the movement of people and goods across the NCR. She added that enhanced road infrastructure would help address increasing traffic volumes on one of the region's important transport corridors.
The Chief Minister also stated that National Highway designation would provide the institutional framework required for integrated corridor development, allowing infrastructure projects to be implemented more efficiently under central agencies. The proposal seeks to ensure consistent design standards and accelerate execution of future improvement works on the route.
The request forms part of wider efforts to strengthen regional transport infrastructure and improve road connectivity within the Delhi-NCR region. If approved by the Centre, the transfer of Mandi Road to the National Highway network would enable the corridor to be developed under NHAI's planning and execution mechanisms, supporting improved mobility between Delhi, Faridabad and Gurugram while accommodating growing traffic demand across the metropolitan region.
