Synopsis

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has initiated the development of a 62-acre automated empty container yard near Nhava Sheva through a long-term concession with Dubai-based RSA Global. The INR 2,580 crore project, located within the JNPA estate at Uran in Raigad district, aims to modernise empty container handling, reduce road congestion and improve cargo movement at India's largest container port. Designed to handle more than 50,000 TEUs every month, the facility will consolidate storage, maintenance and repair operations while supporting port-led logistics infrastructure. The project is expected to generate around 750 direct and indirect jobs and strengthen freight efficiency across western, northern and central India.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has commenced the development of a 62-acre automated empty container yard near Nhava Sheva in Maharashtra through a long-term concession awarded to Dubai-based logistics company RSA Global. Announced in the past week, the INR 2,580 crore project will be developed within the JNPA estate at Uran, Raigad district, with the objective of improving empty container management, reducing congestion around the port and strengthening logistics infrastructure.
The proposed facility will be one of India's largest automated empty container yards and has been planned to consolidate container storage, maintenance, repair and repositioning within a single integrated logistics hub. JNPA expects the project to address operational bottlenecks associated with fragmented container yards located around the Nhava Sheva region while improving turnaround times for shipping lines and transport operators.
Spread across 62 acres, the yard will be fully paved and equipped with an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), automated cranes, OCR-enabled entry gates and a digital Yard Management System to monitor container movements in real time. The infrastructure has been designed to process more than 50,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) every month and provide services including container storage, maintenance, repairs, pre-trip inspections, SOLAS-compliant weighment, fabrication and transfers to container freight stations.
The development forms part of JNPA's strategy to optimise land use within the port ecosystem and improve cargo handling efficiency. Empty container storage around Nhava Sheva is currently dispersed across dozens of privately operated yards, many connected through narrow roads with limited parking facilities. Port authorities believe the integrated yard will reduce truck waiting times, ease roadside congestion and improve the movement of containers between terminals, freight stations and industrial facilities.
The project will also incorporate sustainability features, including solar power integration, water recycling systems through sewage and effluent treatment plants, and large-scale tree plantation within the premises. Dedicated truck parking and improved driver amenities have been included to support continuous operations while reducing congestion around the port area.
RSA Global has stated that the project represents a long-term investment in India's logistics sector and aligns with Maharashtra's efforts to expand modern freight infrastructure. The facility is expected to generate around 750 direct and indirect employment opportunities during development and operations. JNPA considers the project an important addition to the port's logistics ecosystem as container volumes continue to grow and demand increases for faster, technology-driven cargo handling across India's western gateway.
