Synopsis

A section of an under-construction flyover on the Nagpur–Kolhapur National Highway at Vishnupuri, on the outskirts of Nanded, Maharashtra, collapsed on Thursday, injuring two college students. The incident occurred near Shri Guru Gobind Singhji Institute of Engineering and Technology when a concrete slab fell from the structure. Authorities secured the site, diverted traffic and launched a technical investigation into the collapse. The inquiry will assess construction quality, structural integrity and safety compliance before work on the highway flyover project resumes.

A portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed on Thursday on the outskirts of Nanded in Maharashtra, injuring two college students and triggering an official inquiry into the incident. The accident occurred near Shri Guru Gobind Singhji Institute of Engineering and Technology at Vishnupuri on the Nagpur–Kolhapur National Highway when a section of the flyover's concrete structure gave way as the students were passing beneath it. The injured students were shifted to a nearby hospital, where they received treatment for minor injuries and were reported to be out of danger.
Police, district administration officials and emergency response teams reached the location shortly after the collapse. The affected stretch was cordoned off to prevent public access, while vehicular movement was diverted to alternate routes to facilitate rescue operations and a structural assessment. Authorities also began clearing debris from the site to restore safe movement in the area.
Officials indicated that an investigation had been initiated to establish the circumstances that led to the collapse. The inquiry is expected to examine the quality of construction, engineering practices and other technical aspects associated with the project. A detailed inspection of the remaining portions of the flyover is also being undertaken before further construction activity resumes.
The flyover is being constructed along the Nagpur–Kolhapur National Highway, an important transport corridor that carries both regional and long-distance traffic through Maharashtra. Infrastructure projects of this nature are intended to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at busy junctions, making structural safety and adherence to engineering standards critical during the construction phase. No information suggesting damage to adjoining structures or additional casualties had been reported at the time authorities released initial details.
Officials confirmed that the two injured students were receiving medical care and that their condition was stable. The administration also appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic diversions while inspection and restoration work continued at the site. Further decisions regarding the construction schedule are expected to depend on the findings of the technical investigation and any recommendations arising from it.
The incident has drawn attention to safety management at active infrastructure construction sites, particularly where public roads remain operational during execution. The outcome of the official probe is expected to determine the cause of the collapse and whether any corrective measures or accountability proceedings are required before work on the flyover progresses.
