Debris clearance continues at Kashedi Ghat as traffic restrictions remain on Mumbai–Goa highway

Synopsis

• Debris removal operations continued at the Kashedi Ghat section of National Highway 66 after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall disrupted traffic on the Mumbai–Goa highway.
• Mumbai-bound vehicles have been diverted to the opposite carriageway while authorities work to restore normal movement on the affected stretch.
• The landslide temporarily closed the highway for several hours, with machinery and emergency personnel deployed to clear mud and rocks from the roadway.
• Authorities have advised motorists to exercise caution as restoration work continues amid ongoing monsoon conditions.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and local authorities continued debris removal operations for the second consecutive day at the Kashedi Ghat section of National Highway 66, following a landslide that disrupted traffic on the Mumbai–Goa highway. The incident, triggered by heavy monsoon rainfall, led to temporary closure of the affected carriageway and prompted traffic diversions to ensure safe movement of vehicles.
The landslide occurred on the Mumbai-bound carriageway near Kashedi Ghat in Ratnagiri district after a portion of the adjoining hillside collapsed onto the highway. Large quantities of mud, rocks and debris blocked the road, forcing authorities to suspend traffic on the affected stretch while restoration work commenced. The closure lasted for several hours before controlled traffic movement was resumed through diversions.
To maintain connectivity, Mumbai-bound traffic has been diverted to the Goa-bound carriageway, where vehicles are being allowed to move under regulated conditions. Traffic on other sections of the highway has remained largely unaffected, although motorists have been advised to expect delays near the landslide site until clearance operations are completed.
Multiple excavators, earthmoving equipment and personnel have been deployed to remove accumulated debris and stabilise the affected hillside. Officials are also monitoring the slope for further movement, as intermittent rainfall has complicated restoration efforts and increased the risk of additional slips. The clearance operation is being carried out with safety precautions to minimise disruption while ensuring the structural stability of the roadway.
The incident follows a spell of intense rainfall across parts of Maharashtra, particularly in the Konkan region, where overflowing rivers, waterlogging and landslides have affected road connectivity. NHAI has activated its Highway Restoration Quick Action Team on sections of NH-66 to respond to rain-related disruptions, including flooding and overtopping at multiple locations in Raigad district.
Kashedi Ghat is among the most challenging stretches on the Mumbai–Goa highway, with steep terrain making it susceptible to landslides during the monsoon. Authorities have urged motorists travelling along the corridor to remain updated on traffic advisories and follow diversion instructions until normal traffic is restored on the affected carriageway.
Officials said debris removal and safety inspections would continue until the highway is fully cleared and declared safe for unrestricted traffic. The restoration exercise is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted connectivity along one of western India's key transport corridors while reducing risks associated with ongoing heavy rainfall.
