Synopsis

• The Himachal Pradesh government has deployed around 15,000 personnel and over 1,600 machines to restore road connectivity disrupted by heavy monsoon rains across the state.
• Restoration efforts are being led by the Public Works Department, with priority being given to national highways, state highways and key district roads affected by landslides and flash floods.
• The government has instructed field officials to expedite clearance operations and ensure essential routes are reopened at the earliest.
• The large-scale deployment comes as persistent rainfall continues to damage transport infrastructure and disrupt connectivity in several districts.

The Himachal Pradesh government has intensified efforts to restore road connectivity across the state by deploying approximately 15,000 personnel and more than 1,600 machines to clear roads affected by the ongoing monsoon. The large-scale operation is aimed at reopening highways and other critical transport links that have been disrupted by landslides, flash floods and continuous rainfall in several districts.
According to Public Works Minister Shri Vikramaditya Singh, the restoration drive is being undertaken on a war footing, with engineers, technical staff, machine operators and field personnel working across affected locations. Heavy machinery, including excavators, earthmovers, loaders and other specialised equipment, has been deployed to remove debris, stabilise vulnerable slopes and restore safe vehicular movement.
The Public Works Department has prioritised the reopening of national highways, state highways and major district roads that serve as vital links for the movement of residents, emergency services and essential supplies. District-level teams have been instructed to respond swiftly to fresh incidents of road blockages and ensure that restoration work continues despite challenging weather conditions.
The minister stated that road clearance operations are being monitored continuously, with officials coordinating closely with district administrations and disaster management authorities. The government is also assessing vulnerable stretches where recurring landslides have caused repeated disruptions during the current monsoon season, enabling preventive measures to be taken alongside restoration work.
Heavy rainfall over the past several days has triggered landslides, slope failures and flooding across multiple parts of Himachal Pradesh, damaging roads, bridges and drainage infrastructure. The adverse weather has affected connectivity to remote villages and hill towns, prompting authorities to focus on restoring access to isolated areas while ensuring public safety.
Besides clearing blocked roads, engineering teams are carrying out temporary repairs to damaged carriageways, retaining structures and drainage systems to facilitate the safe movement of vehicles until permanent restoration works can be undertaken. Officials are also inspecting road stretches susceptible to further slope failures as rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days.
The state government has appealed to residents and travellers to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel on vulnerable hill roads during periods of intense rainfall. Authorities have emphasised that restoration work will continue until normal connectivity is re-established across all affected routes, with additional manpower and machinery being deployed wherever required to accelerate the recovery process.
