The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts has unveiled The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary as the new identity for its recently acquired luxury retreat in Coorg, Karnataka, repositioning the property as a nature-focused destination within its hospitality portfolio. The announcement was made earlier this week as the company marked four decades of operations in India's luxury hospitality sector.
Located within a 76-acre estate comprising ancient forests, coffee plantations and the biodiversity-rich Western Ghats, the rebranded property has been integrated into The Leela's portfolio of luxury hotels and resorts. The company said the new identity reflects its strategy of developing destinations that draw upon the character and natural setting of their locations.
Situated within one of Coorg's oldest coffee estates, the retreat has been developed with an emphasis on integrating architecture and landscape. The property has received IGBC Platinum certification and incorporates design elements inspired by Kodava heritage, estate living and local craftsmanship while preserving the surrounding forest environment.
Commenting on the launch, Anuraag Bhatnagar, Chief Executive Officer of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, said the rebranding represents an important milestone in the company's strategy of developing hospitality destinations rooted in their local surroundings. He added that the property reflects The Leela's approach of creating guest experiences that celebrate the distinct identity of each destination.
The resort comprises 71 villas, including duplex villas, family villas and private pool villas. Its accommodation offering is anchored by the four-bedroom Sunbeam Presidential Villa, which overlooks the surrounding forests.
The property also offers a range of outdoor and experiential activities, including guided forest walks, plantation tours, birdwatching, cycling trails, waterfall excursions and stargazing experiences. These programmes have been designed to showcase Coorg's biodiversity, coffee-growing traditions and cultural heritage.
Dining facilities include Luma, an all-day restaurant overlooking the lake, and Zen, which serves Pan-Asian cuisine. Other offerings include The Cellar and 92 Degrees, a café dedicated to the region's coffee heritage. Guests can also participate in the Estate to Brew experience, which combines plantation walks, coffee tastings and guided sessions on the history of coffee cultivation in Coorg.
The retreat features a seven-acre lake at its centre and includes a private helipad to improve accessibility for visitors. Wellness facilities are housed within a 27,000 sq ft centre operating under Aujasya by The Leela, the group's wellness programme inspired by traditional Indian healing practices. The facility also includes outdoor treatment spaces and a Vinyasa Yoga Deck overlooking the lake.
The Leela said the Coorg property strengthens its portfolio of nature-led luxury destinations as it continues to expand across business and leisure markets in India. The company currently has 24 hotels that are operational or under development across gateway cities and leisure destinations, reflecting its ongoing expansion in the country's premium hospitality sector.
