Synopsis

The Centre has approved infrastructure projects worth INR 2,039 crore for Kerala following discussions between the state's Public Works Department and the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The approvals include a new bridge across the Kabani River, works on National Highways 744, 966 and the old NH-66 stretch, along with a major four-laning project on the Kollam–Theni National Highway. The Centre has also given in-principle approval to ropeway projects at Sabarimala, Munnar and Wayanad, while several other highway proposals have moved closer to approval.

The Centre has approved infrastructure projects worth INR 2,039 crore for Kerala after a meeting between Kerala Public Works Minister P K Basheer and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi. The approvals are aimed at strengthening road connectivity, improving highway infrastructure and supporting transport links across different parts of the state.
According to Basheer, the approved projects include the construction of a bridge across the Kabani River connecting Perikkallur in Wayanad district with Bairakuppe in Karnataka at an estimated cost of INR 49 crore. The bridge is expected to improve interstate connectivity and reduce travel time for residents and commercial traffic between the two regions.
The Centre has also sanctioned INR 98.40 crore for works on National Highway 744, INR 172 crore for improvements on National Highway 966 between Ramanattukara and Chandranagar in Palakkad, and INR 66 crore for development works on the old National Highway 66 stretch between Kazhakkoottam and Balaramapuram.
A major share of the approved investment, amounting to INR 1,663 crore, has been allocated for the four-laning of the Kadavoor–Aanjilimoodu stretch of the Kollam–Theni National Highway. The project is expected to improve traffic movement on the corridor and strengthen connectivity between Kerala and neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
Basheer further stated that the Union minister had given in-principle approval for ropeway projects proposed at Sabarimala, Munnar and Wayanad. These projects are expected to improve tourist access while easing congestion at key destinations, subject to further technical and statutory clearances.
He also said approval for widening National Highway 185 from Adimali to Kumily is expected shortly. In addition, revised alignments for the proposed Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha bypasses are likely to receive clearance in the near future, paving the way for the next stages of planning and execution.
Basheer added that Gadkari directed officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to prepare and submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed elevated highway connecting Ramanattukara with Kozhikode airport. Once completed, the project is expected to improve airport access and ease congestion on one of the state's busy transport corridors.
The latest approvals add to the Centre's ongoing investments in Kerala's highway network, where multiple National Highway expansion projects are currently under execution to improve logistics, reduce travel time and strengthen connectivity with neighbouring states. The state has also been pursuing several new road, bridge and transport infrastructure proposals to support economic growth and tourism.
