The Rajaji Nagar housing redevelopment project in Thiruvananthapuram has reached the final stage of completion, with the first phase of residential buildings ready for occupation. However, beneficiaries will have to wait until a permanent water supply connection is provided before the flats can be handed over. Implemented under the Smart City Thiruvananthapuram initiative, the project aims to rehabilitate residents from one of the city's oldest informal settlements while improving housing standards and urban infrastructure.
The Rajaji Nagar housing redevelopment project in Thiruvananthapuram has moved closer to completion, with the first phase of residential apartments ready for occupation. The only major requirement pending before beneficiaries can move into their new homes is the provision of a permanent water supply connection. Once the Kerala Water Authority completes the utility linkage and the remaining formalities are cleared, authorities are expected to initiate the handover process for the completed flats.
The redevelopment project is being implemented by Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Limited (SCTL) as part of the city's broader urban renewal programme. Rajaji Nagar, one of the capital city's oldest informal settlements, has been identified for comprehensive redevelopment to provide residents with modern housing, improved civic amenities and planned urban infrastructure while replacing ageing and inadequate residential structures.
The first phase of the project comprises 248 dwelling units along with supporting infrastructure designed to create a self-sustained residential community. Construction of the apartment blocks has largely been completed, while internal roads, drainage facilities, electrical infrastructure and other essential civic works have also reached an advanced stage. Officials have indicated that the absence of a permanent water supply connection remains the primary reason occupancy has not yet commenced.
The redevelopment has been planned in phases to ensure that rehabilitation is carried out in an organised manner while construction activities continue in other parts of the project. Once the first batch of residents shifts into the completed apartments, authorities are expected to proceed with the subsequent phases of redevelopment, allowing the transformation of the settlement to continue without disrupting the overall rehabilitation programme.
According to project officials, coordination with the Kerala Water Authority is underway to complete the final utility connection required before occupancy certificates can become operational. Water supply is among the mandatory civic services that must be available before residents can legally occupy newly constructed residential buildings. Completion of this last utility requirement is therefore considered critical to bringing the project into operation.
The Rajaji Nagar redevelopment is one of the major housing initiatives undertaken under the Smart City Mission in Thiruvananthapuram. Besides replacing old housing stock, the project is intended to improve the quality of life of beneficiaries by providing safer residential buildings, organised public spaces and access to essential urban services. The integrated planning approach also seeks to create a more sustainable and better-managed neighbourhood than the earlier settlement.
Urban redevelopment projects of this nature require close coordination between construction agencies, utility providers and government departments before possession can be granted. Even after construction is completed, civic infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, sewerage and statutory approvals must be in place to ensure the residential complex is fully functional and compliant with applicable regulations.
With the structural work substantially completed, the Rajaji Nagar housing project has entered its final implementation stage. The completion of the permanent water supply connection will pave the way for occupancy, bringing the long-awaited rehabilitation initiative closer to benefiting hundreds of families. Once operational, the project will represent a significant milestone in Thiruvananthapuram's efforts to modernise urban housing through planned redevelopment under the Smart City programme.
