The Centre has advanced the redevelopment of Warangal's Mamnoor Airport by granting in-principle approval for a project estimated at nearly INR 497 crore, while the proposed airport at Bhadradri Kothagudem remains pending due to site-related issues. Authorities are awaiting a formal proposal for an alternative location before the Bhadradri project can proceed. The contrasting progress highlights the different stages of Telangana's efforts to expand regional aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity across the state.
The Union government has moved forward with the redevelopment of Warangal's Mamnoor Airport by granting in-principle approval for a project estimated at INR 496.86 crore. At the same time, the proposed greenfield airport at Bhadradri Kothagudem remains on hold as the state government works to secure approval for a new project site.
The approval for Warangal airport marks an important milestone in Telangana's plan to strengthen regional air connectivity. The redevelopment project will involve upgrading airport infrastructure to enable scheduled commercial flight operations and improve access to the northern districts of the state. The project is expected to support industrial growth, tourism and business travel in the region.
Officials indicated that the project will include key aviation infrastructure such as an upgraded runway, taxiways, apron, terminal-related facilities and other supporting works. The Airports Authority of India has initiated the process for implementing the project, although construction will begin only after land acquisition and statutory clearances are completed.
In contrast, the Bhadradri airport proposal has encountered delays after technical assessments found the initially identified site unsuitable for airport development. Factors such as terrain conditions and nearby infrastructure affected the viability of the original location, prompting the Telangana government to identify an alternative site for the project.
The state has prepared a revised proposal for the new location, but the project cannot progress until the Centre receives and approves the required site clearance under the Greenfield Airports Policy. Until then, the Bhadradri airport proposal will remain at the planning stage.
Telangana has been pursuing multiple airport projects to improve regional connectivity beyond Hyderabad. Along with Warangal and Bhadradri Kothagudem, other locations are also being evaluated for future aviation infrastructure as passenger demand and industrial activity continue to grow across the state.
While Warangal has emerged as the frontrunner among the proposed regional airports, the future of the Bhadradri project will depend on the successful completion of technical evaluations, regulatory approvals and land-related formalities. Together, the projects form part of the state's long-term strategy to expand aviation infrastructure and support balanced regional development.
