The Telangana government has approved an administrative sanction of INR 2,278.14 crore for the proposed joint-use airport project at Adilabad, paving the way for land acquisition and preparatory works. The project will combine defence and civilian aviation infrastructure, with over 2,000 acres identified for development. Once completed, the airport is expected to improve regional air connectivity, support industrial growth, enhance logistics and strengthen strategic infrastructure in northern Telangana.
The Telangana government has approved an administrative sanction of INR 2,278.14 crore for the development of a joint-use airport at Adilabad, marking a significant step towards expanding aviation infrastructure in the state's northern region. The sanctioned amount will primarily be utilised for land acquisition and the relocation of utilities required before construction begins.
The proposed project will be developed as a joint-use facility, enabling both defence and civilian aviation operations from the same airport. The model is intended to optimise infrastructure while improving regional connectivity and supporting future passenger and cargo traffic in Adilabad and neighbouring districts.
As part of the project, the state plans to acquire around 2,009 acres of land. A major portion of the land has been earmarked for defence-related infrastructure, while the remaining area will accommodate civil aviation facilities, including a passenger terminal, cargo handling infrastructure, aircraft parking areas, maintenance facilities and other operational support services.
The state government has instructed officials to expedite the land acquisition process and complete it within the targeted timeframe. Parallel activities, including shifting utilities and obtaining statutory approvals, will be taken up to ensure the project progresses without unnecessary delays. The airport's detailed design and construction phases are expected to commence after these preliminary activities are completed.
Officials believe the airport will play a key role in improving connectivity to northern Telangana, reducing travel time to the region and creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment. Improved air access is also expected to benefit local industries, agricultural exports and logistics businesses by providing faster connectivity to major domestic markets.
The Adilabad project forms part of Telangana's broader strategy to strengthen regional aviation infrastructure. Along with ongoing airport developments at Warangal and proposals for other locations across the state, the government aims to create a wider aviation network that supports balanced regional development and economic growth.
Once operational, the joint-use airport is expected to serve both strategic and commercial purposes, enhancing defence preparedness while providing scheduled passenger services and cargo operations. The project is also expected to generate employment during both the construction and operational phases, contributing to the long-term development of the region.
