Synopsis

Tata Power will commence construction of its INR 6,675 crore solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Odisha this October, marking a significant investment in India's clean energy manufacturing sector. The 10 GW project, coming up at Gopalpur in Ganjam district, will strengthen the domestic supply chain for solar equipment by producing key upstream components used in photovoltaic modules. The facility is expected to support India's renewable energy ambitions, reduce dependence on imports and generate employment while reinforcing Odisha's position as an emerging hub for advanced manufacturing.

Tata Power is set to begin work in October on a large-scale solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Odisha, taking another step towards expanding India's domestic renewable energy manufacturing capabilities. The project, with an investment of approximately INR 6,675 crore, will be developed at Gopalpur in Ganjam district and will have an annual production capacity of 10 GW. 
The upcoming facility will manufacture solar ingots and wafers, two critical components used in the production of photovoltaic cells and modules. Increasing domestic production of these materials is expected to strengthen India's solar supply chain at a time when the country is rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity and encouraging local manufacturing. 
The project forms part of Tata Power's broader strategy to integrate its solar manufacturing operations by moving further upstream in the value chain. Producing ingots and wafers within the country will enable the company to improve supply security, reduce dependence on imported inputs and support the growing demand for domestically manufactured solar equipment. 
Odisha was chosen for the investment after the company evaluated multiple locations based on infrastructure, industrial ecosystem, logistics and policy support. The project will be established within the Tata Steel Special Economic Zone at Gopalpur, where industrial infrastructure is already in place to facilitate large-scale manufacturing. 
Construction of the facility is expected to be carried out in phases, with commercial production planned after the completion of the first phase. Once operational, the plant will add substantial manufacturing capacity to India's renewable energy sector and complement the company's existing solar cell and module manufacturing operations. 
Apart from strengthening clean energy manufacturing, the investment is expected to create employment opportunities during both the construction and operational stages. It is also likely to encourage the growth of ancillary industries, including engineering services, equipment manufacturing, logistics and industrial support businesses in the region. 
The project aligns with the Centre's efforts to develop an integrated domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem under the Make in India initiative. As India accelerates its transition towards clean energy, investments in upstream manufacturing facilities such as ingot and wafer plants are expected to play an important role in enhancing energy security, reducing import dependence and building a globally competitive renewable energy industry.
