Synopsis

The Union Cabinet has approved a multi-tracking railway project worth INR 1,264 crore to strengthen the Ballari-Guntakal corridor spanning Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The project will add around 46 km of railway lines, improve network capacity, ease congestion and support faster movement of passengers and freight. Scheduled for completion by 2028-29, the initiative is expected to enhance connectivity for nearly seven lakh people across 99 villages while supporting industrial logistics and regional economic development.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a railway infrastructure project worth INR 1,264 crore to expand capacity on the Ballari-Guntakal section of Indian Railways. The project involves the construction of third and fourth railway lines on the busy corridor that passes through parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the project aims to strengthen multimodal connectivity by improving the movement of passengers and freight across one of the region's important rail corridors. Once completed, the expanded section will add nearly 46 km to the existing railway network and is expected to be operational by 2028-29.
The upgraded corridor is expected to benefit around 99 villages with a combined population of nearly seven lakh. Higher line capacity will enable smoother train operations, reduce congestion and improve service reliability, particularly on routes that currently experience heavy passenger and freight traffic.
The Ballari-Guntakal route plays a significant role in transporting bulk commodities from mining and industrial belts. Freight moving through the corridor includes iron ore, limestone, dolomite, coal, iron and steel products, fertilisers and food grains. The capacity enhancement is projected to support an additional freight movement of about 16.22 million tonnes per annum, improving supply chain efficiency and reducing logistics costs for industries dependent on rail transport.
Apart from freight operations, the expanded rail infrastructure is also expected to improve access to tourist destinations in the region, including Ballari Fort and the Sri Kumara Swamy Temple. Better connectivity is likely to support local economic activity by facilitating easier movement of visitors and businesses.
The government has also highlighted the environmental benefits of the project. By shifting more cargo to rail, the enhanced corridor is expected to reduce fuel consumption, lower carbon emissions and contribute to India's climate goals while promoting rail as an energy-efficient mode of transportation.
According to the government, the project aligns with its broader strategy of expanding railway infrastructure to improve connectivity, support industrial growth and create employment opportunities through investments in transport networks.
