The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has identified 12 priority road projects that it plans to complete over the next year to strengthen the city's road connectivity and ease congestion. The initiative focuses on constructing long-pending "missing links" that interrupt traffic flow across several neighbourhoods. By completing these stretches, the civic body aims to reduce travel time, improve connectivity between major corridors and create a more efficient urban road network while addressing bottlenecks caused by incomplete infrastructure.
The Pune Municipal Corporation is stepping up efforts to complete a dozen strategically important road projects that are expected to remove critical gaps in the city's transport network. The civic body has prioritised these "missing link" roads as part of its broader mobility improvement plan and intends to complete them within the next year.
These projects involve relatively short stretches of road that remain incomplete despite adjoining roads being fully developed. Although limited in length, they play a significant role in connecting major routes and improving movement between residential areas, commercial districts and arterial roads. Once operational, the links are expected to reduce dependence on congested junctions and provide commuters with more direct travel options.
Many of the projects have remained stalled for years due to land acquisition challenges, relocation of public utilities and procedural approvals. PMC is now working to resolve these issues through coordinated action with various government departments so that construction can proceed without further delays.
The corporation believes that completing these road links will deliver quicker and more cost-effective traffic relief than undertaking large-scale road widening projects. Improved connectivity is expected to distribute vehicle movement across multiple corridors, helping reduce congestion on heavily used roads while shortening travel distances for daily commuters.
Apart from easing traffic, the projects are expected to improve access for public transport, emergency vehicles and essential services. Better road continuity will also support future urban growth by creating a more integrated transport network capable of handling increasing vehicle volumes.
Officials have indicated that work on the identified projects will be taken up in phases, depending on the completion of land acquisition and statutory clearances. Regular monitoring of project progress has also been planned to ensure that execution remains on schedule.
With Pune continuing to experience rapid urban expansion and rising traffic volumes, the completion of these missing road links is expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity, improve traffic circulation and enhance the overall efficiency of the city's road infrastructure.
