Pune Metro Line 3 has achieved a major milestone after the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) approved the first 13-km section of the corridor for passenger operations. The cleared stretch connects Maan with the R.K. Laxman Museum station forms part of the 23-km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line. With the mandatory safety certification now secured, the project has entered its final operational stage, and commuter services are expected to begin after the completion of statutory and administrative formalities.
The first operational segment of Pune Metro Line 3 has moved a step closer to opening for the public after receiving mandatory safety approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The certification covers a 13-km elevated section between Maan and the R.K. Laxman Museum station, marking an important milestone in the city's expanding metro network.
The safety clearance follows a detailed assessment of the corridor's infrastructure, including track systems, signalling, power supply, station facilities, emergency preparedness and train operations. The inspection is a prerequisite before any metro line can commence commercial passenger services.
The approved section forms part of the larger Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor, which has been developed to improve connectivity between Pune's western suburbs, major IT hubs and the city centre. Once operational, the line is expected to provide a faster and more dependable transport option for thousands of commuters travelling daily between residential neighbourhoods and employment centres.
Metro Line 3 is also significant because it is being implemented under a public-private partnership model, bringing together government agencies and private sector participation for the development and operation of urban transit infrastructure. The project is expected to complement the existing metro network while reducing dependence on road transport along one of Pune's busiest traffic corridors.
With the safety certification now in place, project authorities will complete the remaining procedural requirements before opening the line to the public. These include operational readiness checks, staff deployment, trial schedules and final approvals from the concerned authorities.
Construction on the remaining portion of the corridor will continue until the entire route between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar becomes operational. Once fully commissioned, the metro line is expected to improve urban mobility, reduce travel time and help ease congestion on roads connecting Pune's growing technology and commercial districts. The project is also expected to encourage greater use of public transport as the city continues to expand.
