The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved an INR 15.22 crore project to upgrade the Kathua Grid Station to strengthen the region's power transmission network. The project includes increasing the station's capacity and carrying out related infrastructure works to meet rising electricity demand. The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved an INR 15.22 crore project to upgrade the Kathua Grid Station as part of its efforts to strengthen power infrastructure in the region. The decision was taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and includes enhancing the capacity of the existing grid station along with the execution of allied infrastructure works.
The project has been planned to strengthen the region's power transmission network in response to the increasing demand for electricity. According to an official spokesperson, the upgrade will help build a more reliable and efficient transmission system capable of supporting current and future power requirements in Kathua and surrounding areas.
Once completed, the upgraded grid station is expected to improve the reliability and stability of the transmission network by reducing overloading and ensuring smoother power distribution. Consumers in Kathua and adjoining areas are likely to benefit from better quality electricity supply with fewer transmission-related disruptions.
The investment is part of the Jammu and Kashmir government's broader push to modernise and expand its power infrastructure. In recent years, the administration has been focusing on strengthening transmission and distribution networks across the Union Territory through grid upgrades, new substations and capacity enhancement projects to improve electricity availability and support residential, commercial and industrial growth.
Reliable transmission infrastructure has become increasingly important as electricity demand continues to rise due to urban expansion, infrastructure development and growing economic activity. Upgrading key grid stations such as Kathua is expected to improve the overall efficiency of the power network while creating the capacity needed to meet future demand.
