Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials implementing the Indiramma Housing Scheme to prioritise the construction of affordable homes within established residential areas and close to beneficiaries' workplaces instead of developing housing on city outskirts. The directive aims to reduce commuting time, safeguard livelihoods and improve access to urban infrastructure and public services. The state government has also instructed officials to identify suitable government land for the programme and accelerate implementation. The move forms part of Telangana's broader affordable housing strategy, which seeks to deliver housing that is better integrated with existing urban neighbourhoods while ensuring improved quality of life for economically weaker sections.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to ensure that houses developed under the Indiramma Housing Scheme are constructed within existing residential areas and in locations close to beneficiaries' places of work, rather than on the outskirts of cities. The direction was issued during a review meeting on the state's housing programme held in the past week.
According to the Chief Minister, affordable housing projects should enable beneficiaries to continue their livelihoods without being displaced to peripheral locations that lack adequate connectivity and employment opportunities. He emphasised that housing developments should be integrated into established urban neighbourhoods to provide residents with easier access to workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential civic infrastructure.
The Chief Minister also directed officials to identify suitable government land within residential localities for the implementation of the scheme. He asked the concerned departments to expedite land identification and ensure that housing construction progresses in accordance with the state's implementation schedule.
The Indiramma Housing Scheme is one of the Telangana government's flagship affordable housing initiatives aimed at providing permanent homes to economically weaker households. Under the recently launched urban component of the programme, the government plans to develop one lakh affordable homes across Hyderabad's Core Urban Region (CURE) through multi-storey residential projects. Each dwelling will have a built-up area of 525 sq. ft., with eligible beneficiaries receiving government financial assistance while contributing the balance amount under the scheme.
The state government has positioned the programme as part of its broader strategy to improve housing access for low-income families while ensuring that residential developments remain connected to employment centres and existing urban infrastructure. The latest directive reflects a shift towards location-sensitive planning, with greater emphasis on reducing travel time and improving the long-term liveability of affordable housing projects.
Officials were also instructed to monitor the progress of ongoing housing projects and coordinate with relevant departments to facilitate timely implementation. The government is seeking to ensure that land availability and project execution do not delay the rollout of the scheme, while maintaining the objective of delivering housing within established residential environments.
The Indiramma Housing Scheme is being implemented across Telangana as a continuing programme to expand access to affordable housing for eligible households. The urban housing component complements the state's wider residential development strategy by focusing on permanent housing that supports both social welfare objectives and sustainable urban growth.
