Road safety experts have stressed the need for practical, affordable and evidence-based measures to improve road safety across India, particularly in urban areas where most crashes occur due to poor road design. Speaking at a conference organised by the India chapter of the International Road Federation, experts said interventions such as better road markings, improved street lighting, raised pedestrian crossings, roundabouts and safer intersections can significantly reduce accidents. They also highlighted the role of technology and global best practices in creating safer roads while improving mobility for all users.
Road safety experts have emphasised the need for practical, scalable and cost-effective measures to reduce road accidents in India, stating that affordable and evidence-based interventions can significantly lower fatalities, especially in urban areas.
Speaking at a conference organised by the India chapter of the International Road Federation (IRF) in New Delhi on Friday, experts highlighted that improving road safety does not always require large infrastructure investments. Instead, they said several low-cost engineering and traffic management solutions can deliver immediate and measurable results.
Geetam Tiwari, Professor Emeritus at IIT Delhi, said improving road markings to enhance visibility during night-time can play a major role in making city roads safer. She added that adopting internationally accepted road safety practices can help reduce crashes while ensuring better mobility for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and other road users.
K K Kapila, President Emeritus of the International Road Federation, said a majority of urban road accidents occur because of common design shortcomings on roads operating under normal traffic conditions rather than because of high-speed travel.
He said proven engineering measures such as roundabouts, raised pedestrian crossings, traffic-calming features, improved street lighting and safer intersection designs have demonstrated the ability to reduce crashes by 20 per cent to 80 per cent. According to him, these measures cost only a fraction of large infrastructure projects, can be implemented much faster and begin delivering safety benefits almost immediately.
The conference also showcased the growing role of technology in road safety. Jitendra Kaushik, CEO of Onnyx Electronisys, presented technology-driven solutions designed to support safer urban traffic management and improve road safety outcomes.
Road safety has remained a major concern in India over the years, with government agencies and industry experts increasingly advocating a combination of engineering improvements, stricter enforcement, public awareness and technology-based interventions to reduce accidents and save lives. Experts have consistently maintained that safer road design is one of the most effective ways to prevent crashes before they occur.
