Police and protesters clashed outside Albania's Parliament after demonstrations against a proposed luxury resort linked to Jared Kushner turned violent. Authorities used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters after some participants threw eggs and bottles at police officers during the protest.
The demonstrations have continued for nearly two months in the Albanian capital, Tirana, with activists raising concerns over alleged corruption and the environmental impact of large-scale development projects along the country's Adriatic coastline. Protesters argue that the planned resort could damage a protected wetland that serves as a habitat for flamingos and several other bird species.
The movement has adopted the name "Flamingo Revolution," referring to the flamingos that gather in the protected wetland where the resort has been proposed. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Parliament, where police in riot gear formed barricades and used water cannons after demonstrators attempted to push against security barriers. Protesters also chanted slogans claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump had unintentionally united them through the controversy surrounding the project.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has strongly supported the Kushner-backed resort and other tourism development projects in the country. The government has maintained that the protests are politically motivated and has rejected allegations that the developments are linked to corruption or environmental misconduct.
Several protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Rama, accusing his administration of corruption and alleging that public assets were being transferred through controversial development projects. Demonstrators also said they would continue their campaign to maintain pressure on the government over the issue.
The controversy widened after Reuters reported over the past week that Albanian prosecutors are investigating land transactions connected to the proposed resort. According to the report, investigators suspect that a Miami-based businessman who sold land to developers working with Kushner may have used forged property title documents. The businessman, who also faces allegations of laundering money linked to cocaine traffickers, has denied all accusations. The developers involved in the project have stated that they believe the land acquisitions were carried out legally and that the transactions are valid.
The proposed resort is expected to involve multi-billion-dollar investment and has been promoted as a major tourism development along Albania's largely untouched Adriatic coastline. Jared Kushner has previously spoken about identifying the location while travelling by yacht with his wife, Ivanka Trump. However, since the protests began, he has not publicly commented on the controversy. Developers have confirmed that Kushner is an investor in the project but have not disclosed the extent of his investment or the nature of his involvement.
The resort proposal has attracted international attention as it combines foreign investment, environmental concerns and political debate in Albania. The issue has become one of the country's most closely watched development projects, with environmental groups seeking stronger safeguards for protected coastal areas while the government continues to promote tourism-led economic growth.
