Synopsis

Sri Lanka's stock market closed marginally higher after gains in information technology and real estate stocks lifted investor sentiment. The CSE All-Share Index advanced 0.24%, while SMB Finance PLC and Carson Cumberbatch PLC emerged as the top gainers. Despite the positive close, trading activity declined sharply, with both share volumes and market turnover falling from the previous session. Foreign investors remained net sellers, whereas domestic investors continued to support the market through net purchases, according to exchange data.

Sri Lanka's stock market ended in positive territory, supported by gains in information technology and real estate stocks, even as overall trading activity slowed compared with the previous session. The CSE All-Share Index closed 0.24% higher at 21,199.37, reflecting modest gains across the broader market.
Among the top-performing stocks, SMB Finance PLC recorded the highest percentage gain, rising 33.3%, followed by Carson Cumberbatch PLC, which advanced 8.6% during the trading session. Market participation, however, remained subdued. Trading volume declined to 37.7 million shares from 91.1 million shares recorded in the previous session.
The equity market's turnover also dropped significantly to INR 1.08 billion Sri Lankan rupees (USD 3.22 million), compared with INR 3.53 billion Sri Lankan rupees in the previous session, according to data released by the Colombo Stock Exchange.
Investor activity showed mixed trends. Foreign investors remained net sellers, offloading shares worth INR 313.5 million Sri Lankan rupees. In contrast, domestic investors continued to support the market, recording net purchases of INR 953.2 million Sri Lankan rupees.
The gains in real estate stocks come as the sector continues to play an important role in Sri Lanka's equity market, alongside banking, diversified holdings and information technology companies. Market participants have been closely monitoring investor sentiment, liquidity and foreign fund flows as key indicators of the market's near-term direction.
