Mumbai Metro Line 2B has reached another construction milestone with the successful installation of the first 70-tonne back-span pier segment of the Bandra Railway Over Bridge. The development marks the beginning of steel superstructure work on one of the city's most complex cable-stayed bridges. Being built over the Western Express Highway and the Western Railway corridor near Bandra Railway Station, the project is progressing while rail and road traffic remain operational. Once completed, Metro Line 2B will improve east-west connectivity, reduce travel time and integrate with several major transport networks across Mumbai.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully lifted and installed the first 70-tonne back-span pier segment of the Bandra Railway Over Bridge for Mumbai Metro Line 2B. The installation marks the commencement of steel superstructure work on one of Mumbai's most technically challenging cable-stayed bridge structures.
The 200-metre-long bridge is being constructed across the Western Express Highway and the Western Railway corridor near Bandra Railway Station, one of the city's busiest transport hubs. The project is being executed in a highly congested urban environment while ensuring uninterrupted rail and road traffic operations.
The cable-stayed bridge includes a 104-metre main span supported by back spans measuring 43 metres and 53 metres. The superstructure comprises 49 composite steel segments, including 24 segments across the back spans and 25 segments forming the main span.
Construction has also progressed on the bridge pylons, with two pylons rising to a height of 20.1 metres. Four out of the six planned casting lifts have already been completed at both pylon locations. MMRDA has also completed the entire substructure for the bridge, including foundations and piers, allowing work to move to the next phase of steel superstructure erection following the successful placement of the first segment.
The engineering achievement is significant as the bridge is being built over an active railway corridor and one of Mumbai's busiest highways without disrupting ongoing rail and vehicular movement. The execution involves careful planning, specialised lifting operations and strict safety measures to carry out construction within limited working windows.
Metro Line 2B forms an important part of Mumbai's expanding metro network and will connect DN Nagar with Maharashtra Nagar-Mandale, creating a major east-west transit corridor across the city. The elevated metro line is expected to improve connectivity between the western and eastern suburbs while providing seamless interchanges with Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3 and 7, the Mumbai Monorail, and both the Central and Western Railway suburban networks.
MMRDA has been advancing civil construction across different stretches of Metro Line 2B over the past few years. The corridor is among several metro projects being developed to strengthen Mumbai's public transport infrastructure, improve multimodal connectivity and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
