Synopsis

The Central Government has approved power distribution projects worth INR 40,739 crore for Uttar Pradesh under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The investment will be used to modernise electricity distribution infrastructure, strengthen network capacity and improve the quality and reliability of power supply across the state. The programme is also expected to reduce distribution losses, enhance operational efficiency and support Uttar Pradesh's rising electricity demand driven by rapid urbanisation, industrial growth and expanding consumer connectivity.

The Central Government has approved power distribution infrastructure projects worth INR 40,739 crore for Uttar Pradesh under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), reinforcing efforts to modernise one of the country's largest electricity distribution networks. The investment is intended to strengthen the state's power delivery system through infrastructure upgrades that improve operational efficiency, enhance service reliability and support future growth in electricity demand.
Rather than focusing on power generation, the approved programme targets the distribution network, which plays a crucial role in delivering electricity from substations to homes, industries, commercial establishments and public infrastructure. As Uttar Pradesh continues to witness rapid urban expansion, industrial development and rising electricity consumption, the need for a stronger and more resilient distribution system has become increasingly important.
The approved projects will involve upgrading key components of the distribution network to improve its overall performance. Planned interventions include strengthening distribution lines, modernising substations, replacing ageing electrical equipment and expanding network capacity in areas experiencing increasing demand. The programme also promotes the adoption of modern technologies that enable utilities to monitor system performance more effectively, detect faults quickly and improve network management.
A major objective of the initiative is to improve the efficiency of electricity distribution companies by reducing technical and commercial losses that affect financial sustainability. Strengthening physical infrastructure and adopting technology-driven monitoring systems are expected to improve energy accounting, enhance operational planning and ensure more reliable electricity supply for consumers across urban and rural areas alike.
The investment is also expected to support broader economic development within the state. Reliable electricity remains a critical requirement for manufacturing units, industrial parks, commercial centres, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and residential communities. By improving the quality of power supply, the upgraded distribution network can help create a more favourable environment for industrial investment while supporting the expansion of economic activity across Uttar Pradesh.
The programme forms part of the Centre's long-term strategy to modernise electricity distribution systems across the country through the RDSS. Unlike conventional infrastructure upgrades that focus solely on expanding capacity, the scheme also emphasises operational reforms, technological integration and financial sustainability to create more efficient and consumer-oriented power utilities.
Implementation of the approved works will be carried out by the state's distribution companies in accordance with the technical and financial framework prescribed under the scheme. Individual projects will be executed in phases, with periodic monitoring to ensure adherence to implementation timelines and quality standards. The phased approach is intended to minimise service disruptions while allowing infrastructure improvements to be integrated into the existing network.
Once completed, the investment is expected to significantly enhance the resilience and efficiency of Uttar Pradesh's electricity distribution system. Improved network infrastructure, combined with modern operational practices, will help meet growing consumer demand, reduce system losses and strengthen the state's power sector. The programme represents an important step towards building a more reliable electricity distribution network capable of supporting Uttar Pradesh's long-term urban, industrial and economic development.
