Fresh sanctions under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) declined sharply in Andhra Pradesh during the last five financial years, according to data presented by the Ministry of Rural Development in Parliament. While the state sanctioned only 1.79 lakh houses between 2021-22 and 2025-26, cumulative figures show that more than 2.46 lakh houses have been approved under the scheme. The data also indicates that a substantial number of sanctioned homes remain under construction, highlighting the state's continued implementation challenges.
The pace of fresh house sanctions under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) has slowed considerably in Andhra Pradesh over the past five financial years, even as the state continues to work towards completing previously approved rural housing projects.
Data released by the Ministry of Rural Development in a written reply in the Lok Sabha shows that Andhra Pradesh sanctioned 1,79,410 houses under PMAY-G between 2021-22 and 2025-26. During the same period, only 41,761 houses were completed, while 1,37,649 remained under construction.
The figures suggest a marked decline in fresh approvals compared with the state's overall programme targets, reflecting a slowdown in new housing sanctions while execution of existing projects continues.
As of 16 July 2026, the Centre had allocated a cumulative target of 3,21,326 houses to Andhra Pradesh under PMAY-G. Of these, the state had sanctioned 2,46,929 houses and completed 90,581 units, leaving 2,30,745 houses pending completion against the allocated target.
The Ministry stated that PMAY-G implementation is being supported through regular target allocation, periodic progress reviews, dashboard-based monitoring, workshops with states and Union Territories, and rural mason training programmes to accelerate construction. The scheme also converges with several central initiatives to provide toilets, drinking water, electricity, LPG connections and wage support for beneficiaries.
Financial data presented in Parliament shows Andhra Pradesh received a cumulative central share of INR 515.74 crore under PMAY-G between FY2021-22 and FY2025-26. For FY2026-27, the state has been allocated a tentative central assistance of INR 4.92 crore, subject to revision based on future target allocations.
At the national level, the government informed Parliament that 1.95 crore houses were sanctioned and 1.18 crore completed during the last five years under PMAY-G. Cumulatively, 3.92 crore houses have been sanctioned across the country against an allocation of 4.18 crore houses, with more than 3.10 crore homes completed as of 16 July 2026.
According to the Ministry, independent assessments by institutions including IIM Ahmedabad, NITI Aayog and the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy have found that PMAY-G has improved housing security, sanitation, household income, financial inclusion and overall quality of life for rural beneficiaries across the country.
