The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has granted in-principle approval for the construction of a service road and associated infrastructure at Bannadka as part of the ongoing four-laning of National Highway-169 between Sanur and Bikarnakatte. The proposed works are estimated to cost INR5.8 crore. The approval follows long-standing demands from local residents and public representatives, who had raised concerns over road safety and accessibility after the highway widening works. The proposed service road is expected to improve local connectivity, provide safer access for nearby residents and businesses, and facilitate smoother movement of traffic along the corridor. The project forms part of NHAI's efforts to enhance road infrastructure and safety on NH-169, an important highway connecting Mangaluru with interior regions of Karnataka.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has accorded in-principle approval for the construction of a service road and related infrastructure at Bannadka on National Highway-169, providing relief to residents who have been seeking safer access along the busy highway corridor. The proposed works, estimated at INR5.8 crore, will be taken up as part of the ongoing four-laning project between Sanur and Bikarnakatte.
The decision comes after repeated representations from local residents and elected representatives highlighting the need for dedicated service roads in the area. Following the highway expansion, concerns had been raised over restricted access to residential and commercial properties, increased traffic movement and safety risks for pedestrians and local commuters.
According to officials, the proposed infrastructure will improve connectivity for settlements located along the highway while reducing conflicts between local traffic and high-speed vehicles using the main carriageway. The service road is also expected to provide safer entry and exit points for motorists, easing traffic movement in the Bannadka stretch.
The four-laning of NH-169 is a key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between Mangaluru, Moodbidri, Karkala and other parts of coastal and interior Karnataka. The corridor carries significant passenger and commercial traffic, making the provision of supporting infrastructure such as service roads essential for both mobility and road safety.
Public representatives welcomed the approval, stating that the project would address long-pending concerns of residents and improve accessibility to educational institutions, businesses and residential areas situated along the highway. The proposed service road is expected to benefit daily commuters while supporting the overall efficiency of the upgraded highway network.
With the in-principle approval now in place, NHAI is expected to complete the detailed planning and statutory processes before commencing construction. Once implemented, the project will strengthen local connectivity and complement the ongoing expansion of NH-169, contributing to safer and more efficient road transport in the region.
