The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will set up a dedicated Vadodara Project Implementation Unit (PIU) to improve project execution and address chronic congestion on the NH-48 corridor, one of western India's busiest highway stretches. The new unit will oversee highway widening, bridge upgrades, traffic management and maintenance works on the Vadodara section, where frequent bottlenecks have affected passenger and freight movement. The decision follows persistent traffic snarls on the highway, particularly around the Jambuva–Golden Chowkdi stretch, which carries heavy industrial and commercial traffic. The dedicated PIU is expected to improve coordination with local authorities, speed up project implementation and strengthen long-term traffic management on the strategic Delhi–Mumbai highway corridor.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to establish a dedicated Project Implementation Unit (PIU) in Vadodara to improve the management of infrastructure projects and reduce persistent congestion on National Highway 48 (NH-48). The move is aimed at strengthening project monitoring and accelerating road improvement works along one of the country's busiest national highway corridors.
The Vadodara stretch of NH-48 serves as a crucial link on the Delhi–Mumbai corridor, carrying substantial passenger, industrial and freight traffic. Over the past several months, recurring traffic bottlenecks, particularly around Jambuva Bridge and Golden Chowkdi, have highlighted the need for dedicated administrative oversight and faster execution of infrastructure upgrades.
According to officials, the proposed PIU will oversee the planning, execution and maintenance of highway projects in and around Vadodara. It will also facilitate closer coordination with state agencies, municipal authorities and law enforcement to address operational challenges, monitor ongoing works and ensure quicker resolution of issues affecting traffic movement.
The new office is expected to play a key role in implementing measures such as highway widening, bridge improvements, maintenance works and traffic management interventions. By bringing project supervision closer to the affected corridor, NHAI aims to reduce execution delays and improve the efficiency of infrastructure delivery.
NH-48 is one of India's most important economic corridors, connecting Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Mumbai. The Vadodara section, surrounded by industrial clusters and logistics hubs, experiences heavy movement of commercial vehicles, making uninterrupted traffic flow critical for regional trade and supply chains.
Officials believe that the dedicated Vadodara PIU will strengthen institutional capacity for highway management while supporting long-term infrastructure planning in the region. Besides easing congestion, the initiative is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel time and enhance connectivity for commuters and freight operators using the NH-48 corridor.
